Roman Catholic bishop in Ukraine reacts to Kiev violence

RKTs BISHOP LEON DUBRAVSKY CONDEMNS TERRORISM AND CALLS FOR PRAYER

RISU, 1 September 2015

An appeal from the ordinary of the Kamenets-Podolsk diocese, Bishop Leon Dubravsky, with regard to the bloody confrontations at the walls of the Ukrainian Supreme Soviet in Kiev on 31 August 2015 was distributed on the CREDO website.

"The events that occurred yesterday near the building of the Supreme Soviet shook the entire Ukraine and world community. This tragedy forces us to think about the causes and consequences. The Catholic Church condemns terrorism as a method for achieving any goals. Human life is priceless and to encroach on it is absolutely unacceptable. Violence cannot be a means for resolving controversial questions. One must not permit death and terrorism! I condemn bloodshed and terrorism!

The Ukrainian authorities must focus on the situation and prevent danger or they must recognize that they are not in control of the situation. The safety of citizens is the chief priority. The authorities must come out to the people to explain and to discuss with the people. Otherwise distrust and hostility are engendered in people. The authorities must calm the citizens and explain to them what is happening. In this situation the authorities issued explanations after the terrorist act, but there were no explanations before it, before the vote in the Ukrainian Supreme Soviet," the appeal says.

As of 1 September, three national guardsmen have died because of confrontations near the walls of the Supreme Soviet and 140 were wounded. (tr. by PDS, posted 3 September 2015)
