Number of Ukrainian Orthodox parishes changing jurisdictions triples

DURING 2015 40 RELIGIOUS PARISHES DECIDED TO PART WITH MOSCOW PATRIARCHATE

RISU, 29 October 2015

More and more Orthodox Ukrainians are making a confessional transfer out of the UPTsMP into the UPTsKP.

This was reported during a round table in the Committee on Affairs of Culture and Spirituality that was held in Kiev on 28 October 2015.

Participants in the event included people's deputies of Ukraine and representatives of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations, offices of the central executive government, the Ukrainian prosecutor general's office, experts in the sphere of freedom of conscience and protection of human rights, and public organizations.

As Espreso.tv reports, during the round table it was reported that from the start of 2015 to October, the number of confessional transfers has tripled. Whereas during last year there were 28, now 67 parishes have declared their intention to change confessional adherence.

The greatest number of transfers recorded were from the Moscow patriarchate into the Kiev patriarchate—40.

Among provinces, the leader was the Rovno province—11 transfers. Then come Kiev province—8, Poltava province—5, Kirovograd province—5, and Ternopol province—4.

Eight parishes of UAPTs declared their desire to unite with the UPTsKP and 4 parishes of the Kiev patriarchate, to the contrary, decided to transfer into the Autocephalous Church.

The approval rating toward the church has changed. Whereas before 2015, people trusted the church most of all, second place was occupied by the army, and third place by public organizations and volunteers, in 2015 this indicator has changed. Volunteers turned up in first place and the church fell to third. (tr. by PDS, posted 29 October 2015)
