Europeans investigate church conflicts in Ukraine

OSCE STUDIES CAUSE OF MASS TRANSFERS OF PARISHES FROM UPTsMP TO UPTsKP IN TERNOPOL REGION

RISU, 8 December 2015

Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe arrived in Ternopol province for a study of the religious situation. In particular, they visited the Kremenets region where recently transfers of parishes from the Moscow patriarchate to the Kiev patriarchate have occurred.

As ZIK [Zakhidna News Corporation] reports, local officials of the regional state administration presented to representatives of OSCE information regarding the procedure for registration of the charters of religious organizations and the settlement of conflict situations which have arisen specifically in the villages of Kuikov, Kolosova, Bashuki, and Katerinovka of the Kremenets region.

OSCE representatives also were interested in the status of law suits which are under consideration in courts, the press service of the Kremenets administration reports.

We recall that after the Revolution of Dignity and the start of the Russian aggression, parishes of villages in Ternopol province rejected the jurisdiction of the Moscow patriarchate and transferred to the Kiev patriarchate. The parishioners' desire to change confessions often evokes opposition by Moscow priests and is accompanied by conflicts.

Such a situation exists particularly in a number of villages of Kremenets province on whose territory the Pochaev lavra, which is at the disposal of the UPTsMP, also is located.  Deputies of the Ternopol provincial council have frequently adopted appeals to the leadership of the government regarding the return of the sacred object to the state.
