Jehovah's Witnesses in southern Russia at risk of liquidation

PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE ISSUES WARNING TO JEHOVISTS OF STAVROPOL

The prosecutor's office of Stavropol warned the religious organization "Jehovah's Witnesses of Russia Central Stavropol" about the impermissibility of conducting extremist activity.

 

The cause of this is that literature that had been entered into the Federal List of Extremist Materials was seized in the home of the minister, the press service of the oversight agency reports.

 

This man was already previously held administratively accountable and yesterday the leader of the aforesaid organization was issued a warning about the impermissibility of conducting extremist activity. (tr. by PDS, posted 18 April 2016)

 

PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE OF STAVROPOL TAKES RESPONSE MEASURES IN ORDER TO PREVENT EXTREMIST ACTIVITY

The prosecutor's office of the city of Stavropol conducted a verification of fulfillment of legislation on combating extremist activity. During the verification it was established that at the end of last year, literature that had been entered into the Federal List of Extremist Materials on the basis of information about a linguistic analysis and information on the official website of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian federation was discovered and seized at the place of residence in Stavropol of [person] "S," one of the members of the local religious organization "Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia Central Stavropol."

 

In accordance with part 1 of article 1 of the federal law of 5 July 2002 "On combating extremist activity," mass distribution of extremist materials as well as their preparation and storage for purposes of mass distribution constitute extremist activity. On the basis of that fact, by a decision of the October district court of the city of Stavropol, [person] "S" was held administratively accountable for committing the violation of law provided by article 20.29 of the Code of Administrative Violation of Law (possession of extremist materials for the purpose of mass distribution). It was established that said person is the minister of a literature group of the local religious organization "Jehovah's Witnesses of Russia Central Stavropol," because of which the prosecutor of the city issued a warning about the impermissibility of conducting extremist activity to the leader of the organization in accordance with article 7 of the federal law "On combating extremist activity."
