Orthodox activists petition regional officials to ban controversial movie

TVERGOSFILMOFOND WILL NOT BUY FILM "MATILDA" FOR DISTRIBUTION IN TVER AND PROVINCE

Weekend, 7 September 2017

The Committee for Cultural Affairs of Tver province considered an appeal from the international public organization "Russian Assembly," which asked the governor of Tver province, Igor Ruden, to prohibit the showing of the film "Matilda" on the territory of the region.

On 16 August, Russian Assembly officially sent to the heads of the Donetsk People's Republic, Luhansk People's Republic, and governors of Belgorod, Kaluga, Kemorovo, Tver, and Tula provinces a request, following Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia, not to permit the showing of the historical drama "Matilda" by Aleksei Uchitel on the territory of the regions.

We quote the text of the appeal:

"We, members of the international public organization "Russian Assembly," expressing the opinion of the Orthodox community of the country, call to your attention that the film 'Matilda' of the director Aleksei Uchitel grossly distorts the historical truth about the Holy Tsar Nicholas II and members of his family, falsifies the glorious history of Russia, infringes the rights of a large portion of Russian citizens, inflames hostility between individual groups of Russian society, and is blasphemous from the moral point of view.

"Our assessment is based on the expert conclusion prepared on the basis of study of the scenario of the film and trailers created by the film crew."

The authors of the appeal assure that the showing of the film will lead to "dangerous consequences for social stability and civic peace in the country" and they call attention to the petition against the film, which was signed by more than 1,000 persons. They also express thanks to the leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, who was the first to speak out for banning "Matilda" for showing on the territory of the republic.

Following Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia, the showing of "Matilda" was prohibited in Tver province also. The Committee for Cultural Affairs of Tver province (Chairwoman Irina Repina) responded to the appeal of Russian Assembly. […]

Russian Assembly has already thanked Igor Ruden for this decision, in the article "First Russian Governor against Matilda."

However, this decision does not by any means mean that it will be impossible to see "Matilda" in Tver altogether. It has been learned that "Sinema Star" and "Silver Cinema" have not cancelled their plans for circulating the picture. "Zvezda" has not yet commented on the situation, stating that a decision will be made in the month of release. The premiere of "Matilda" in Russia is scheduled for 25 October.
