European court takes up Jehovah's Witnesses' case

E.C.H.R. ACCEPTS FOR REVIEW THE APPEAL OF LIQUIDATION OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES

RIA Novosti, 18 September 2017

The European Court of Human Rights accepted for review the appeal of the Jehovah's Witnesses against the finding of the organization to be extremist and its liquidation, the court's website reports.

"The court has communicated directly the appeals of a number of prohibited organizations that have been recognized in Russia as terrorist or extremist: 'Tablighi Jamaat,' 'Aum Shinrikyo,' 'Jehovah's Witnesses,' 'Falun Dafa [Falun Gong],' 'Nursi,' and 'Ahl-Sunnah,'" the E.C.H.R. specified.

Communication of an appeal means that the court has found it possible to examine issues posed in it and has sent it to the authorities of the state against which the app;icants have appealed, with the suggestion to explain their position.

Russian Supreme Court Judge Yury Ivanenko on 20 April ruled to recognize the main organization of Jehovah's Witnesses in the Russian federation as extremist and to liquidate it. The court also ruled to transfer the organization's property to state income. Following that, the Russian Supreme Court recognized the liquidation of the organization to be legal.
