Russian parliament looking for new law restricting religious groups

BILL FOR PROTECTION OF CITIZENS FROM FRAUDULENT SECTS TO BE READY BY NOVEMBER

RIA Novosti, 12 October 2017

A working group of the Federation Council, headed by Senator Elena Mizulina, plans to prepare by November a draft law on protection of Russian citizens from fraudulent activities of sects, which, Mizulina notes, often have Western origin.

"Sects are a very dangerous environment, and legislation must regulate this area. We are preparing suggestions as to how to protect citizens from them. Unfortunately, today there is not a single region where there are not such sects," her press service quotes Mizulina.

The senator says that sects operate under the guise not only of religious organizations "but even quite seemingly inoffensive schools of leadership." "Using various psychotechniques, these sects engage in taking property from citizens. Cases are common where sects try to manipulate the minds of people," she said.

It is planned that in the period of the fall session of the Federation Council, up to 30 November, the working group will review all suggestions for changing the legislation in the sphere of protecting Russians from fraudulent actions by destructive sects and submit an agreed edition of a draft law.

Earlier the senator, citing expert estimates, reported that in Russia there now operate on the order of 500 destructive sects. (tr. by PDS, posted 13 October 2017)
