Jehovah's Witnesses banned in Georgian breakaway region

DECISION BANNING JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES IN SOUTH OSSETIA TAKES EFFECT

Kavkazskii Uzel, 17 October 2017

The activity of the republican organization of Jehovah's Witnesses, ruled by the Supreme Court of South Ossetia to be extremist, will be monitored by law enforcement agencies, the head of the South Ossetia Ministry of Justice declared today.

As Kavkazskii Uzel has reported, on 11 October the head of the Ministry of Justice of South Ossetia declared that the Supreme Court had found the republican organization of Jehovah's Witnesses to be extremist and banned its activity.

"The decision of the court has taken effect today. The activity of this organization will be monitored by the competent agencies and cut off by law," Interfax-Religiia quotes the minister of justice of South Ossetia, Zalina Laleiva.

She also noted that the judicial decision was not appealed, Sputnik-Ossetia reports.

The minister did not want to specify how many persons compose the organization that the court banned, noting that "there are not a few." "There are more than a thousand of them and their ranks are being filled day by day," Lalieva explained.

She emphasized that there is only one religious organization in the republic registered in the Ministry of Justice—the Alan diocese.

Comment on the part of the South Ossetia Jehovah's Witnesses relative to the decision of the republic's Supreme Court banning the organization and finding it extremist has still not been received. (tr. by PDS, posted 25 October 2017)
