Moscow-related church in Ukraine seeks external support

SYNOD DIRECTS PRIMATE TO COMMUNICATE TO LOCAL CHURCHES ABOUT PRESSURE ON UPTs

At its last session in 2018, the Synod of the UPTs decided to tell the local churches, embassies, and ombudsmen about the anticonstitutional policiy of the authorities with regard to the church.

 

On 7 December 2018, the concluding session of the Holy Synod of the UPTs was held in the residence of the primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and all-Ukraine Onufrey, the Department of Information and Enlightenment reported.

 

Ten bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church discussed the results of the work of synodal institutions and the unconstitutional actions of politicians against the UPTs.

 

In connection with the violation of the constitutional rights of believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Holy Synod directed His Beatitude Onufrey to send official informational letters concerning pressure on clergy and laity to local Orthodox churches, the commissioner of the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine for human rights, and also international rights advocacy organizations and embassies accredited to Ukraine.

 

The head of the legal department of the UPTs, Archpriest Alexander Bakhanov, was directed to conduct "monitoring and identification of violations of the rights of clergy, laity, and institutions of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

 

As the Union of Orthodox Journalist has reported, members of the Holy Synod did not bless believers of the UPTs to participate in the "unification council." (tr. by PDS, posted 8 December 2018)
