Patriarch Filaret causes friction in new church

CONSTANTINOPLE DISPLEASED WITH FILARET'S ACTIVE ROLE IN LEADERSHIP OF NEW CHURCH OF UKRAINE

Interfax-Religiia, 11 January 2019

The patriarchate of Constantinople thinks that Filaret Denisenko, the "honorary acting spiritual director" of the new church of Ukraine, does not allow its official head, Epifany Dumenko, to develop his full force.

In an interview with BBC, Archbishop Daniel, one of the exarchs of Constantinople, stated that the time has come for Filaret to understand his place in the new church.

"That is all I ask of Filaret: give Epifany the opportunity to be the primate of the church. Be a spiritual grandfather or papa, advise, but give him the opportunity to do his job," the archbishop declared.

In his opinion, Filaret now by his actions can destroy what he has built in the course of his whole life.

The exarch of Constantinople noted that although within Ukraine Filaret has the title of patriarch "out of respect for his advanced age," for the public at large he is the former metropolitan of Kiev. (tr. by PDS, posted 11 January 2019)
