UKRAINIAN MINISTRY OF CULTURE REQUIRES UPTs TO CHANGE ITS NAME

The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture published a list of religious organizations that must introduce changes into their name and charter in accordance with recent legislative amendments.
The corresponding list was published in the government newspaper, Uriadovyi Kurier, last Saturday.
On the basis of results of a religious studies expert analysis, the Ministry of Culture established that the action of parts 7 and 8 of article 12 of the Ukrainian law "On freedom of conscience and religious organizations" extends to religious organizations (religious communities, administrations, and centers; monasteries; religious brotherhoods' missionary societies [missions]; and ecclesiastical educational institutions) that are active on the territory of Ukraine and are constituent elements (members) of such religious associations: Ruska (Russian) True Orthodox Church (RIPTs); Ruska (Russian) Old Ritualist Church (priestless concord), alternative name—Ancient Orthodox Pomorie Church (DPTs); Ukrainian Orthodox Church (in unity with the Russian Orthodox Church) (UPTsMP); Ruska (Russian) Ancient Orthodox Church (RDTs Novozybkov Concord); and Ruska (Russian) Orthodox Old Ritualist Church (RPSTs).
According to the report, within three months the aforesaid religious organizations must insert into their charter the changes provided for by part 7 of article 12 of the Ukrainian law "On freedom of conscience and religious organizations" and submit them for registration in accordance with established procedure.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada on 20 December 2018 adopted a law requiring the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to show in its name its affiliation with the Russian Orthodox Church. The corresponding draft law No. 5309 was supported as a basis and in the whole by 240 people's deputies. On 22 December, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed this law.
The document provides that "a religious organization that is a constituent part of the structure of a religious organization with its center in a state that has committed armed aggression against Ukraine and temporarily occupied its territory is required to reflect in its name its affiliation with such a religious organization beyond the borders of the country."
