ADMINISTRATION OF KEMEROVO OBLAST URGES LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO COUNTERACT "POPULARIZATION" OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES
SOVA Center for News and Analysis, 31 January 2019
The administration of Kemerovo oblast warned heads of cities and districts about the continuing activity of Jehovah's Witnesses and called for counteracting them by involving the news media and "traditional" confessions.
On 17 January 2019 the administration of Kemerovo oblast distributed to heads of cities and districts a letter warning about the danger of Jehovah's Witnesses. The document reports that, despite the ban on the centralized and regional organizations, Jehovah's Witnesses "continue to actively draw new devotees into their ranks," and also to undertake "attempts to establish contacts with representatives of agencies of local administration."
The heads of the lower level structures are urged to adopt measures "for counteracting the popularization of the extremist religious teaching." It is suggested to do this "by means of organizing informational and explanatory work among the population, involving news media and representatives of traditional confessions." It is advised not to permit Jehovah's Witnesses to participate in events conducted by agencies of local administration. (tr. by PDS, posted 3 February 2019)
