Russian parliament member spouts alarmist fantasy about America

DUMA DEPUTY CLAIMS U.S.A. PREPARING REPRESSION AGAINST ORTHODOX CHURCH IN AMERICA DUE TO ITS POSITION ON UKRAINE

Interfax-Religiia, 12 February 2019

The head of the Duma's Committee on Development of Civil Society and Affairs of Public and Religious Associations, Sergei Gavrilov, spoke about the possible adoption by American authorities of discriminatory measures against the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) for its support of Russia's position regarding the problem of infringement of rights of believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UPTs).

"Several days ago, at the patriarch's jubilee, the American Orthodox church declared, out of the mouth of its primate, support for Russia in connection with the schism in Ukraine and in connection with the suppression of the rights of Ukrainian Christians. And, so far as we know, after the return of the delegation the American authorities are preparing serious discriminatory measures against American Orthodox Christians," S. Gavrilov said, addressing a session of the State Duma on Tuesday.

He recalled that the OCA is independent, "a purely American organization, where active parishioners alone are more than 100,000."

S. Gavrilov expressed serious concerns over the fact that in the U.S.A., where the inalienable right to freedom of religious confession is proclaimed, "serious repressions against the American Orthodox church are being prepared." (tr. by PDS, posted 12 February 2019)
