Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia, 1 March 2019

On 1 March 2019, the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria overturned the guilty verdict of Arkady Akopian from the city of Prokhladnyi. The proceedings in the case were terminated. The decision takes immediate effect.

Earlier the prosecutor had requested for Arkady Akopian a suspended sentence of three years of incarceration. The Prokhladnyi district court ordered for him a punishment in the form of 120 hours of compulsory labor. Meanwhile, an amendment was inserted into the Criminal Code according to which Arkady Akopian could not be held accountable on the basis of the article under which he was charged (part 1 of article 282 of the CCRF).

From the very beginning the believer insisted on his complete innocence. (tr. by PDS, posted 1 March 2019)
