Protestants face public opposition to building

by Valentin Bulavko, 13 September 2019

More than 30 residents of the third microdistrict [in the city of Chita] staged a popular gathering in the evening of 12 September in order to express to authorities their displeasure with the construction of a Neopentecostal church near Labor Square in Chita.

The Chitans demanded an explanation of how the local organization of the Life Christian Church of the Full Gospel received 5,000 square meters of land adjacent to the microdistrict, who permitted the construction, and where the religious organization plans to get 36 million rubles, which, according to the estimate of the church itself, will pay for just the first stage of the church.

The activists distributed sign-up sheets against construction among the residents of various buildings of the microdistrict and also gave copies of their correspondence with authorities representing the administration of the governor and Chita city hall, who attended the gathering. The latter noted that the activity of the Life church is not forbidden in Russia, and therefore the organization has the right to build, but they promised to verify the facts stated by the residents about propaganda of faith among children and about the circumstances of getting the land.

Construction vehicles and equipment have already appeared on the fenced off parcel of land of the religious organization. (tr. by PDS, posted 14 September 2019)
