Ukrainian Orthodox reach out to national minority

U.P.Ts.M.P. CONDUCTS FIRST MASS BAPTISM OF GYPSY CHILDREN IN MUKACHEVO

On 22 September, with the blessing of Metropolitan of Mukachevo and Uzhgorod Feodor of the UPTsMP and on the initiative of the chairman of the youth department of the diocese, Archimandrite Agapit, and also of a priest of the diocese, the rector of the Holy Trinity church in Mukachevo, Archpriest Yaroslav Popovich, the baptism of a group of children who live in the Roma (Gypsy) community, a local national minority, was conducted, Religiia v Ukraine reports, citing Mukachevo.net.

 

This was practically the first time in the history of national minorities that a mass baptism was conducted in accordance with the canons of the Orthodox church.

 

After the conclusion of the sacrament, each of the newly baptized received a blessing and a pectoral cross, and the families of the settlement received an icon of the Mother of God as a gift.

 

Also all the mothers of the children who received baptism were given valuable gifts and the children were treated to a dessert. (tr. by PDS, posted 1 October 2019)
