SUPPORTS IDEA
OF ENSHRINING IN CONSTITUTION THE CONCEPT OF MARRIAGE AS A UNION
OF A MAN AND A
WOMAN
Interfax-Religiia,

January 2020
The head
of the
synodal Department for Cooperation of the Church with Society
and News Media,
Vladimir Legoida, supported the suggestion of introducing into
the Russian constitution
a point about the protection of traditional family values and
strengthening the
concept of the family as "a union of a man and a woman."
Earlier
the deputy
head of the World Russian People's Council, Konstatin Malofeev,
had put forward
such a suggestion.
"The
church has
always recognized the unconditional nature of the natural moral
law, according
to which the family is taken as a union of a man and a woman
established by
God, of which the Bible speaks directly and often," Legoida
declared to journalists
on Friday in Moscow.
"Only a
union of
a man and a woman, built on love and fidelity, can lead to
genuine happiness
for all members of a family," he added.
The
chairman of the
synodal department said that the suggestion of the World Russian
People's
Council relies on the traditional understanding of marriage,
which people
living in many countries share.
Legoida
recalled that
the notion of marriage as a union of a man and a woman may be
found in the
constitutions of such countries as Brazil, Cuba, Poland,
Hungary, Bulgaria,
Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Paraguay, Colombia,
Bolivia, Equador, and
others.
"I
suggest that
the inclusion of Russia in this list would show clearly the
attentive attitude
of the multinational Russian people to their traditional values
within the
circumstances of the rapid decline of the institution of
marriage and family. We
welcome the intent of the co-chairman of the working group for
introducing
amendments into the constitution, Andrei Alexandrovich Klishas,
to consider
this suggestion," the church's representative concluded. (tr. by
