PROSECUTOR
ASKS 7
YEARS FOR DEFENDANT IN JEHOVAH'S WITNESS CASE
In the
Lensk district
court of the republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the prosecutor's
office demanded a
real time sentence for Igor Ivashin, who is accused of directing
the activity
of Jehovah's Witnesses.
The
state prosecution
requested for Ivashin seven years imprisonment to be served in a
penal colony
of general regime. The prosecutor also is asking to forbid
Ivashin to occupy a
leadership office in religious associations for a period of six
years. This was
reported on the website of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia.
The announcement
of the verdict is scheduled for 31 March.
On 20
November 2019,
the court returned the case against Ivashin to the prosecutor's
office, but an
appellate court overturned this order, returning the case to the
court of the
first instance. (tr. by PDS, posted 29 March 2020)
