Putin wants his face removed from church wall

R.P.Ts. EXPLAINS SITUATION INVOLVING MOSAIC WITH PUTIN IN CHURCH OF ARMED FORCES

RIA Novosti, 1 May 2020

The rector of the chief church of the Russian Armed Forces, Bishop of Klin Stefan, explained for RIA Novosti the situation involving the mosaic in which Vladimir Putin and other Russian politicians are depicted.

He said, the panel was created in the workshop and it never was located in the church, and it was decided to reject from the exhibition the part with the politicians.

The decision about the replacement was made by the artistic council, which relied on the position of Putin himself, who expressed his opposition.

"By and large this is the correct approach and therefore it is necessary to agree with the opinion of the first person of the state," Bishop Stefan said.

Now the mosaic panel is being reworked, the news agency's source said. "A different theme is being developed. After this it will be mounted immediately in the church.

"Some theme is being developed thereā€”a procession of the cross in Pskov, or something like that. But I cannot tell you exactly. The theme of the new mosaic is being worked up now by Vasily Igorevich Nesterenko," Bishop Stefan concluded.

The church of the Resurrection of Christ, the chief church of the Russian Armed Forces, was built on voluntary donations in the Patriot park in the Moscow suburbs for the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.

On the territory of the church complex it is planned to create a gallery "The Road of Memory." Its length is 1418 paces, according to the number of days of the Great Patriotic [War]. Information about the more than 33 million participants of the Great Patriotic War will be displayed there and also their surviving photographs. (tr. by PDS, posted 2 May 2020)
