Armenian “Stonehenge,” Zorats Megalithic Complex
The similarities between this site, Callanish, Scotland, and the stones rows at Carnac, Brittany, have led some Armenian researchers to conclude that Armenia is the original source for the megalithic civilization of Western Europe. The complex has 203 stones total, and 76 stones have 5-7 cm diameter holes bored in them. Only 63 stones now stand upright, and 16 of these lie at an angle. 90 stones lie flat. The largest menhirs weigh over 50 tons and were probably hauled from a quarry about 3 kilometers distant. Photo Courtesy of Robert Higgins, June 2007.
