Tampa Bay, Fla. – Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and Stetson Law Dean Darby Dickerson will lead a ‘Topping Off’ ceremony for Stetson’s new Law Center and Campus on Friday, June 20 at 9:30 a.m. at the 1700 N. Tampa St. construction site just off Interstate 275.
The event marks the symbolic halfway point in the construction schedule. High above North Tampa Street, crews will set in place the steel framework for the building’s tower. Welded into the tower frame is a time capsule containing writing materials, newspaper articles and images of Stetson’s late dean, Gary Vause, who died of cancer on May 9. Dean Vause spearheaded the college’s efforts to build a Tampa campus.
The Stetson Law Center and Campus will be a major hub for legal activity in downtown Tampa and will house evening law classes, the Tampa branch of the Florida Second District Court of Appeal, and continuing legal education programs. Construction is expected to finish by December, with classes starting in January.
Before the final section of steel is lifted into place, attendees will be encouraged to sign their names on the steel framework. The event is open to the public.
“I am pleased to celebrate with the Tampa community our progress on this significant project,” said Jan Majewski, associate dean of the Tampa campus.
The three-story, 73,500-square-foot building will reflect the same Spanish-Mediterranean architecture of Stetson’s Gulfport campus, including a tower that will overlook downtown Tampa. The first and second floors will house classrooms, a state-of-the-art courtroom, a law library and other law school space. The third floor will house chambers and offices for the Florida Second District Court of Appeal. The general contractor is Angle & Schmid and the architectural firm is FleischmanGarcia.
