Gulfport, Fla. – Stetson University College of Law will present two programs on Jan. 28 that will examine two of the country’s most significant legal issues.
- “Reflections on and Implications of Schiavo” at Stetson’s Gulfport campus, 1401 61st St. S., free registration is required.
- “In the Age of Terrorism -Where Should Attorneys Stand?” at Stetson’s Tampa Law Center, 1700 N. Tampa St., registration is now free.
Reflections on and Implications of Schiavo
Terri Schiavo has been in a vegetative state since 1990. Life, death, family, religion, and politics are some of the themes running through the battle of whether to keep her on life support equipment. Schiavo’s guardian ad litem, Jay Wolfson, her husband Michael Schiavo’s attorney, George James Felos, and Ken Connor, representative for Governor Jeb Bush, will discuss this highly controversial case. Panels will include scholars discussing the constitutionality of Terri’s Law, Schiavo’s implications in trusts and estates, and Schiavo’s impact on the controversial topic of the “right to die.”
Stetson Law professors Rebecca Morgan and Michael Allen will lead the day’s discussions. Morgan is the director of Stetson’s Center for Excellence in Elder Law, which is presenting the program with Stetson’s Office for Continuing Legal Education.
In the Age of Terrorism -Where Should Attorneys Stand?
A panel of distinguished presenters on will examine terrorism-related legal issues, such as the Patriot Act; torture; patriotism in the age of terrorism; and citizenship in a time of repression. American Law Institute President Michael Traynor will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers include attorneys, academic and military and government officials such as Donna A. Bucella, director of the Terrorism Screening Center in Washington, D.C.; and Professor Nikolay M. Kropachev, dean of the Faculty of Law of the Saint-Petersburg State University, chairman of the Charter Court of Saint-Petersburg, Russia.
Stetson Law Professor Roberta Flowers will lead the program. She is director of Stetson’s Center for Excellence in Advocacy, which is sponsoring the event with Stetson’s Office for Continuing Legal Education.
