Educators gather to review future of liberal arts education at Stetson University conference

Dramatic changes in higher education policy and the evolving face of liberal arts education will be discussed during Stetson University’s 35th Annual National Conference on Law and Higher Education in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 13-19. National educators and leaders in higher education will present on topics including “The Frontiers of New Liberal Arts Education and President Obama’s ‘College Scorecard.’”

This year’s conference takes place at The Caribe Royale, 8101 World Center Dr., Orlando, Fla.

The conference plenary session, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, features NASPA president Kevin Kruger speaking on the critical role that modern student affairs plays in the future of quality liberal arts education.

This year’s Facilitator Award, created to recognize educators who embody the values and principles articulated by Stetson Law professors Peter Lake and Robert Bickel in their book, The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University, will also be announced on Feb. 16.

Previous Facilitator award winners include Liviu Librescu, who was killed while bravely protecting his class from the gunman during the Virginia Tech massacre; Gwendolyn Dungy, who served as executive director of NASPA from 1995–2012; and D. Parker Young, Professor Emeritus of Higher Education in the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia.

Laura Rothstein, University of Louisville Professor of Law and Distinguished University Scholar, will serve as an honorary co-chair at this year’s conference. Rothstein received Stetson’s 2011 William A. Kaplin Award for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy Scholarship.
