Stetson University College of Law’s Gulfport campus hosted a public noontime program on Oct. 27 about a first-of-its-kind ordinance to abolish superPACs and limit foreign corporate money in St. Petersburg, Florida, elections.

The one-hour program, “Taking on Citizens United: Short-and-Long-Term Strategies to Restore our Democracy,” featured a panel of national campaign finance reformers and city officials including Federal Election Commissioner Ellen Weintraub, St. Petersburg City Council Vice Chair Darden Rice, Free Speech for People counsel Scott Greytak, and University of Chicago Law School professor Albert Alschuler.

“Six years after Citizens United, we have done no substantive rule making about Citizens United and what it has created,” said FEC Commissioner Ellen Weintraub.

Stetson law professor Joseph Morrissey moderated the panel discussion, co-sponsored by the American Constitution Society, American Promise Tampa Bay, Free Speech for People, the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg area, and the Leif Nissen Foundation for a Better World.

Organizers Julie Kessel of the League of Women Voters, Rae Claire Johnson of American Promise Tampa Bay, Karen Lieberman of the Leif Nissen Foundation, and Stetson Law student chapter president Nathan Bruemmer of the American Constitution Society will be in attendance.
