‘Songs of Perfect Propriety’

The Stetson University School of Music will present Songs of Perfect Propriety by Seymour Barab, featuring Stetson piano professor, Dr. Kristie Born, and guest soprano soloist Amy E. Wheeler, on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Born describes this recital as a cabaret show hybrid, which will highlight words by Dorothy Parker, from Parker’s writings and poems, interspersed among the songs, and also will incorporate multi-media visuals, as well.

The program, part of Stetson’s Artists & Lecturers Series, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall, located at 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.

Before the concert begins, Born will tell the audience about the history of the songs and of Parker’s life and works. By doing this, Born is hoping “to bring the poems to life” by using this somewhat unusual format. She and Wheeler are planning to release a CD of the songs in the near future.

Raised in New York City, Amy Elizabeth Wheeler received her bachelor’s degree in voice from the Manhattan School of Music. Her career began with the MGM film “Fame,” followed by a European tour of the Broadway musical “Hair” performing the role of Crissy. Ms. Wheeler’s prizes and awards include: First Prize in a concerto competition at the 92nd St. Y, New York City (1986), The Fund, a Rockefeller /Kennedy Foundation award for her work as a U.S. artist at international festivals (2000), and a Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation award supporting her research on 18th Century Venetian composer Baldessare Galuppi (2004).
