Spotlight is on students in week ahead

With less than a month ‘til Commencement 2012, campus activities are abundant as students showcase their academic achievements and prepare for the future! This week’s calendar offers a wide range of student-focused events – from the senior art show and student-directed one-act plays to concerts and Stetson Showcase. Here are some highlights:

Senior Art: Digital art and art seniors Habeeb Alsalem, Kristina Collins, Kim Crawford, Brittany Mann, Monica Pollard, Krystal Sellers and Megan Sit will exhibit their works at the Senior Thesis Exhibition, which opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 13, at theHandArtCenter. The exhibition continues through May 2.

Love your Mother (Earth): Earth Week activities kick off Friday, April 13, with the Green Symposium, “The Green Edge: Innovation and Sustainability,” in the LBC. Keynote speaker Cynthia Barnett, author of two books on water scarcity, will have a special session for students at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, in Room 25 of the Library/Media Services.

More Earth Week: Some of this week’s other Earth Week events are: the Green Affair Event 2012 in downtown DeLand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14; “From the Ground Up,” a self-guided tour of the Gillespie Museum, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily; the documentary “Dirt,” 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, in Room 25 of the Library/Media Services; “outdoor” Chapel Service at noon Thursday, April 19, on the Quad; and a day of service on Friday, April 20.

The U.S. & China: Learn about “U.S. & China Relations in a Time of Transition” from Assistant Professor of Economics Benhua Yang, noon to 1 p.m. Friday, April 13, in Room 25 of the Library/Media Services.

Career Advice: New York-based collaborative pianist Linda Mark will share her advice for “Making it as a Musician in New York City,” 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17 in Room 25 of the Library/Media Services. Also, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, a resume-building and interview workshop will be held at the LBC.

Attention leaders: The Student Leadership Banquet will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 19.

Prom Night: Gay Prom, a celebration of LBGT pride and acceptance of diversity, is set for 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, April 13, in the Stetson Room.

Music for our Souls: The last weeks of the semester bring us a series of fabulous concerts. On the schedule this week are: Symphony Orchestra concert, 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 13; Women and Men’s Chorale concerts, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14; the Jazz Combos concert, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17; CMENC Broadway Revue benefit concert, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18; and the Concert Choir concert conducted by Milburn Price, 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20. All in Lee Chapel.

Showcase for Research: Classes will be canceled Wednesday, April 18, for the all-day Stetson Showcase, featuring 150 student presentations of their undergraduate research and creative projects from across the DeLand campus’s academic disciplines. Furman University Professor Angela C. Halfacre will speak on “Conservation Culture and Sustainability Science: Studying Problems, People and Place” at 6:15 p.m. in the Stetson Room. The day will wrap up with the 14th annual Festival of the Moving Image starting at 7 p.m. at the Athens Theater and theSchool ofMusic CMENC Broadway Revue benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Chapel.

Art of Flight: The Art of Flight movie, which follows legendary snowboarders as they dream up new global adventures and progress their sport, will be show at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Rinker Auditorium of the LBC.

Plan to Attend: Stetson’s 106th season of theatre arts will wrap up April 19-22 with a showcase of student-directed one-act plays at Stover Theatre. Shows include Success by Arthur Kopit, directed by Caitlyn Foster; Reverse Transcription by Tony Kushner, directed Caleb Canlon; Words, Words, Words by David Ives, directed by Shane Klingensmith; and Medeaby Christopher Durang, directed by Kristi Collins.

German Film Series: Wings of Desire, the third in a series of German films being shown this semester, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Sampson Hall 227.

Shooting Sports: An introductory to Shooting Sports and firearm safety, being offered through the Stetson Shooting Club, will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 14, and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 15. Meet at LBC Boardroom 213 each day at 8 a.m.

At Bat: Our athletics teams are playing “away” quite a bit this week, but both Softball and Baseball have home games. Hatter Softball takes on Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14. The Baseball team has a home series against Lipscomb the weekend of April 20 to 22. Time is running out:  Concentrated Color: Watercolors by Oscar Bluemner from the Vera Bluemner Kouba Collection will remain up through May 2 in theHandArtCenter.
