Stetson University women’s basketball coach Lynn Bria has filled the first of two openings on her coaching staff by hiring Pam Brown to serve as assistant coach.

Brown, who spent last season as a graduate assistant at North Texas where she was pursuing a Master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies, spend two seasons on the coaching staff at Winthrop and two seasons as Coordinator of Basketball Operations for women’s basketball at Miami.

Brown moved to a career in coaching after a collegiate playing career at Charlotte and a year of professional basketball in Holland.

“I worked with Pam at the University of Miami and I know her very well,” Bria said. “She is a great person and comes from a great family. She has an outstanding background in terms of who she played for and who she has worked for.”

The Coppell, Texas, native enjoyed a four-year career with the Charlotte 49ers basketball team where she was a two-year starter and All-Atlantic 10 performer. She scored more than 1,400 points and had more than 600 rebounds in her career.

Brown was named to the first team All-Atlantic 10 squad as a senior following a season in which she averaged 12.9 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor. During her tenure at Charlotte she helped guide the 49ers to two league titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003. The program also made three straight WNIT appearances.

“She played for Katie Meier at UNC Charlotte,” Bria said. “Katie, who is now at Miami, is someone I have a lot of respect for. She worked for Bud Childers at Winthrop and Karen Aston, who is now at Texas, at North Texas.”

Brown graduated from Charlotte with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and was a Dean’s List member.

As a professional, Brown averaged 17.1 points per game while shooting 56 percent from the field and was third in the league in blocks in 2006-07. She was named to the All-Star Team and also averaged 11.0 rebounds a game.

She joins the Stetson coaching staff where she will work with the Hatters’ post players while also assisting in all aspects of scouting and recruiting.

“She is excellent on the floor and will work with our post players, which is much needed,” Bria said. “I am comfortable with her because I know that she will work hard and will be a really good coach for us.

The Hatters lost two coaches after posting a 23-11 record in 2011-12, a season that included the program’s first trip to the WNIT. Assistant coach Herman Burge left the program to become head women’s basketball coach at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla., and Josh Keys left to pursue interests outside of coaching.
