The week ahead in Hatter Country

With the first week of classes in the books, the threat of Isaac past and many new friendships flourishing, the Hatter community can enjoy a long weekend of sports, culture, and just plain fun-in-the-sun in and around DeLand. Here are some highlights of the week ahead at Stetson. Enjoy a restful Labor Day holiday, Monday, Sept. 3! 

Hatters host weekend Volleyball Tournament: The 2012 Stetson Clarion Classic runs this weekend in the Edmunds Center. Stetson students, faculty, staff with IDs are admitted free. Stetson games include: Friday, 8/31, 3 p.m. against Central Arkansas; Friday, 7 p.m. against Florida Atlantic; Saturday, 9/1, 1 p.m. against Wofford; Saturday, 5 p.m. against Hampton. Stetson hosts Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. Tuesday, 9/4 at Edmunds. Men’s Soccer will play Jacksonville at 7 p.m. at the Athletic Training Facility. Go Hatters!

SOAR Bike Trip on Labor Day: Stetson Outdoor Adventure Recreation (SOAR) will have a bike trip around DeLand, Monday, Sept. 3. Meet in front of the Hollis Center at 10 a.m. 

Teach Me: The GPS Series, offered to students through Campus Life and Student Success, will meet again Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Sage 257 at 5:15-6 p.m. for a session on “How and Why You Should Get Involved on Campus.” Free trail mix and prizes! This is a great way to learn more about Stetson and the opportunities available to students! For more information, visit Campus Life and Student Success (CLASS). 

Race to Your Rho Gamms: For all women students signed up for Sorority Recruitment this fall, Monday, Sept. 3 is your “Meet Your Rho Gamma” meeting, 7-9 p.m. in the Stetson Room. Your Rho Gamma recruitment counselor will help guide you throughout the process. More information, contact the Student Development and Campus Vibrancy office.

Meet the Neighbors: The Community Engagement Fair will be held 12 noon-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, on the Stetson Green outside the CUB. (Rain location is the Stetson Room.) Seize the opportunity to become engaged with community partners and agencies around the university and learn about possible volunteer, internship and job opportunities.

Stay calm and chill out: The Health Hut is open to the Stetson community, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5 on the Quad/Palm Court. Wellness interns will be handing out free stress balls, flyers, and information on how to best manage your time and remain stress-free! If you’re thinking about starting a healthier life without tobacco, join the FREE Quit Smoking Now Group, on Tuesdays, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4. To register, call (904) 482-0189.

Art opening at Hand Art Center: Join in the celebration of two art exhibits opening Friday, Sept. 7 at the Hand Art Center: Oscar Bluemner’s America: Walking Along a New Jersey Canal and Drawings from the Collection of Arthur Goldberg. Public reception is 6-8 p.m. 

Music to Your Ears: Stetson Faculty/Guest Recital featuring Kristie Born and Rose Grace, pianos; Marja Kerney and Thad Anderson, percussion, will be Friday, Sept. 7, 7:30 p.m. in Lee Chapel. Free to Stetson students, faculty, staff with ID.
