Music, art, new traditions in the Week Ahead

Classes are under way, and the first holiday of the year is in the books. Now it’s time for some enrichment! The week ahead at Stetson University offers art and music for culture; adventure on the new zip line in Daytona Beach; a day of Sept. 11 remembrances; a free lesson in politics; and the start of a new tradition – Sunday afternoon Chapel Services. Highlights include:

Concert Time: The jam-packed School of Music calendar includes: Faculty/Guest Recital featuring Kristie Born and Rose Grace on piano and Marja Kerney and Thad Anderson on percussion at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7; Faculty Recital featuring Tom Macklin on trumpet and Joni Bjella on piano, 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9; Faculty Recital featuring Jesus Alfonzo, viola, and Michael Rickman, piano, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11; and Chamber Orchestra Concert featuring Anthony Hose, conductor, and Cameron Huster, harp, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. All concerts are in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall and free with Stetson ID.

Chapel Services begin Sunday.

A new Chapel Tradition: Chaplain Michael Fronk will offer the meditation message, “All People are Created Equal…Wink, Wink…Nudge, Nudge,” as weekly, student-led Chapel Services kick off at a new time – 5:30-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 (and every Sunday thereafter). The Stetson Singers, Dr. Timothy Peter, conductor, will perform “Spirit of Mercy, Truth and Love” by Howard Helvey; Dr. Boyd Jones, organ. Chapel Services are held in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall.

Remembering 9/11: On Tuesday, Sept. 11, Stetson will host a Day of Service and Remembrance to include flag ceremonies at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., a panel discussion at noon, and student and employee volunteers doing beautification work at the DeLand Easter Seals Center from 4-5:30 p.m. Stetson student Brian Emery, whose father passed away during the attacks, will give brief remarks at the 6 p.m. ceremony.

Hatter Productions Travel Trip!: Join Hatter Productions for Ultimate Frisbee and Zip Lining from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Daytona Beach’s Tuscawilla Park. Sigma Nu Pool-B-Q: The cookout and shrimp boil will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Hollis Center Pool, with tickets being sold to benefit DeLand Fire Department. Tank tops also will be on sale for $5.

Emmy Award-winning: Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity is hosting Emmy Award-winning director Fabio Jafet to speak about his career and experience in the media industry on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Rinker Auditorium in the LBC.

Art Opening: A free Opening Reception for two art exhibitions – Oscar Bluemner’s America: Walking Along a New Jersey Canal and Drawings from the Collection of Arthur Goldberg – will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the Hand Art Center. The Bluemner show will continue through Dec. 5, while the Goldberg Collection drawings will be displayed through Oct. 19. Hand Art Center is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Greenfeather Poster Sale: A variety of posters will be sold from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, on the Stetson Green. Ten 10 percent of proceeds will go toward Greenfeather funding and grants.

Greeks Give Back: Come hang out with the fraternities and sororities and join in some community service, from 3-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, on the Stetson Green.

Politics 101: There’s still time to register for Stetson’s third annual Politics 101 conference, a free, day-long crash course on the nuts and bolts of political campaigning, to be held Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Register at www2.stetson.edu/politics101.

Sorority Recruitment: Women are invited to participate in Sorority Recruitment from Friday, Sept. 14, through Sunday, Sept. 16. Visit Greek Life for more information and to sign up.

School, Work, Life: The next workshop in the GPS: Guide to Proactive Success series will focus on “Balancing School, Work and Life.” The workshop will be 5:15 p.m.–6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Sage Science Center Room 257. Trail mix and prizes available every week as you travel toward success!

On the Field: Catch a volleyball or soccer game on campus this week! Men’s Soccer will play Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7. Women’s Soccer will be at home against Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, and against the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14.
