Stetson University has received strong media coverage this month, especially for its 9/11 remembrances and ranking in U.S. News & World Report. DeLand campus faculty members and administrators interviewed during the week of Sept. 8-14 include Paul Croce, History and American Studies; T. Wayne Bailey, Political Science; Wendy Libby, President; Heather Hamilton, Community Organizer Coordinator; and Rabbi Barry Altman, Religious Studies. Our top stories are:

  • Professor of History and American Studies Paul Croce authored a guest column, “Recalling 9-11: Between values, violence,” for the Sept. 11 Orlando Sentinel. Former visiting Fulbright Samia Abu El-Haj authored a column for the Sept. 11 anniversary for the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
  • Stetson’s Sept. 11 remembrance was highlighted in the Daytona Beach News-Journal on Sept. 12. The story included interviews with President Wendy Libby and Community Organizer Coordinator Heather Hamilton and two photographs including one showing Stetson’s flag display – which included a flag for each of the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks.
  • Stetson student Brian Emery lost his father, Edgar Emery Jr., in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the WorldTradeCenter, and his story was shared in the Daytona Beach News-Journal on Sept. 9. WESH Channel 2 (NBC-Orlando) also mentioned Emery’s story and Stetson’s Sept. 11 events on its Sept. 11 morning broadcast. And the News-Journal included the events in its Sept. 11 round-up list.
  • U.S. News & World Report ranked Stetson third in the South for academic quality in its 2013 “Best Colleges” edition, the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the Summerville (S.C.) Patch, Orlando Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel andFlorida Times-Union (Jacksonville, Fla.) reported Sept. 12, and the Chicago Tribune, Charlotte (N.C.) Observer andColumbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer on Sept. 13.
  • Dick Pumphrey, who played football at Stetson 65 years ago, was profiled in the Sept. 9 Daytona Beach News-Journal. Current Head Football Coach Roger Hughes was interviewed for the story, saying he has been trying to meet as many Stetson football alumni as possible, hoping to link the program’s past with its future.
  • Political Science Professor T. Wayne Bailey was interviewed for a Sept. 13 Daytona Beach News-Journal story about the Flagler County Sheriff’s election.
  • Rabbi Barry Altman, who teaches in Stetson’s religious studies program, was interviewed for a Sept. 14 Daytona Beach News-Journal story about welcoming the Jewish New Year with the start of the observance of Rosh Hashana.
  • The Sept. 13 Atlantic ran Law professor Ciara Torres-Spelliscy’s article, “The jobless could swing the election if they are actually registered to vote.”
  • The Sept. 10 Tampa Bay Times  quoted Law professor Charles Rose for the article, “Technicality may void Pasco DUI checkpoint arrests.”
  • The Sept. 10  Harvard Crimson quoted Law professor Peter Lake for the article, “Harvard Could Face Student Lawsuits in Fallout of Cheating Scandal.” The article’s topic was also discussed as part of The Dartmouth’s Daily Debriefing.
  • The Sept. 15 Florida Bar News reports that Stetson University College of Law is offering a Social Justice Advocacy Certificate of Concentration program to prepare students to deal directly with significant social justice issues in civil or criminal law, co-coordinated by Law professors Robert Bickel and Judith Scully.
  • The  Sept. 12 broadcast of Radioactivity program on WMNF radio featured Visiting Law Professor Rachel VanLandingham discussing the book on the Osama bin Laden mission by the Navy SEAL and international law.
