Values and Variety in the Week Ahead

As the fall semester continues, the weeks keep getting busier! This week there are multiple different chances for fun and culture. The Men’s Soccer team starts the weekend off – playing Florida International University on Saturday, Sept. 22. Be sure to put that Hatter green on and cheer the men to victory. Take advantage of DeLand’s museum tours and art fairs as well.

Let’s Hear it Hatters! This Saturday, Sept. 22, the Men’s Soccer team will be playing against FIU at 6 p.m. on the soccer field next to the Athletic Training Facility. They will play again on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. against Florida Atlantic. Come show that Hatter spirit!

Values Day: On Tuesday, Sept. 25, there will be no classes in order to celebrate Values Day on Stetson’s campus. This day is an opportunity to have a stronger appreciation and understanding of the University’s core values. Make sure you check the schedule of events and details to see how you can learn and grow as a person.

Sweet Melodies: On Friday, Sept. 21 there will be a Faculty Recital in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall. The musical concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and will feature Susan McQuinn, flute, and Michael Rickman, piano. Free with a Stetson I.D.

Tour of the Arts: But really… come on a Tour of the Arts! This Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. ‘til 1 p.m. John Sheehy, Career Development coordinator, will be doing a walking tour of some of the most beautiful museums in our community. There will be visits with the museum curators, managers, facilitators and staff to see how they run the museums. Don’t miss the opportunity to discuss DeLand’s rich history. Email Sheehy at [email protected] to save a spot. Also the tour is a perfect link to the following weekend’s event – Smithsonian Eighth Annual National Museum Day.

Old School Saturday: Remember way back, when people could afford to go to dinner and a show on Saturday nights? Well, Hatter Productions is bringing the old tradition back! Saturday, Sept. 22 is “A Night Out on the Town” and they are giving those who register $10 of Mainstreet Money and a free ticket to see the 7:30 p.m. showing of South Pacific at the Athens Theater. Spots are limited so make sure you email [email protected] and include your 800 number. Non-Stetson students are ineligible.

Hatter Harvest markets always attract a good crowd.

Off to the Market: Hatter Harvest is going to be on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come to the farmers market for fresh produce, live music, prepared foods, and sunshine on the Stetson Green!

Break for Chapel: Join Chaplain Fronk and the Chapel Singers at Chapel on Sunday, Sept. 23, 5:30-6 p.m., in Lee Chapel in Elizabeth Hall. Chap’s meditation this week is “Peter Pan 2.0, or Stopping to Sew On Your Shadow.” Student organist Jeremy Vigil will play selections from Mendelssohn. Everyone is welcome!

Walk amongst Artists: On Sunday, Sept. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. DeLand will be holding an art revival with the new Fourth Friday DeLand Art Walk. It is a free, self-guided tour of the Historic Downtown area–art galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurants and boutiques host artists within their businesses. Look for an official Art Walk banner in the front of each stop to identify the participating venues. Choose your own route!

Getting Crazy: The infamous college movie is about to become a point of discussion on Monday, Sept. 24. “Animal House” will be playing in Room 25 of the Library, at 7 to 9 p.m., followed by a discussion.

Jai Ho! Which translates to “may the victory be yours!” Come to movie night, where Slumdog Millionaire will be playing from 7 to 9:30 p.m., where will discuss its impact regarding the effects of globalization and global citizenship in the modern world. Located in Elizabeth Hall 315.

Prayer Pole: See you at the Pole! The Elizabeth Hall flag pole that is- come gather around to pray for our campus and our nation at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Step Out of the Box: Get a little rowdy in An Evening at the Improv with the Stetson University student improv artists this week! The fun and games will take place at Stetson Theatre Arts Second Stage, at the Museum of Florida Art, which is across the street from Chaudoin Hall. The talented students will put on shows at 8 p.m. on Sept. 27, 28, and 29 as well as at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. Free with a Stetson I.D. For information or reservations, call Stetson’s Theatre Arts at (386) 822-8700. Reserved tickets must be picked up 30 minutes prior to curtain.

Willkommen: Or as the English say- Welcome! to the beginning of Stetson German Film Series, starting with “The Promise”, Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. Sampson 227 (with English subtitles). A discussion will follow the screening.

Are you a Poet? This week’s creative arts event will be “Poetry at an Uncouth Hour,” on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 9 to 10:30 p.m. at Night Lights above the bookstore. Students will have the opportunity to share their poetry.

Friends & Family: Don’t forget that Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28-30, will be Stetson’s Annual Family and Friends weekend.

An Instrumental Frenzy:On Sept. 29, Stetson University’s School of Music will be hosting a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo free to children of all ages! Come to Presser Hall, located next to Elizabeth Hall, anytime from 10 a.m to noon and play musical instruments up close as well as enjoy a snack. The alumnae of Eta Pi, the collegiate International Music Fraternity, are sponsoring the event.

History at its Finest: The Smithsonian Eight Annual National Museum Day will be on Sept. 29. Stetson University will have 3 participating sites, and Deland will have 7 participating sites! The community has never had so many museums take part in the national event, so mark the calendar!
