Stetson University’s Finance Department in the School of Business Administration will be hosting a Roberson Executive Lecturer, Gary Starkweather, who will be giving his presentation “Imagination versus Knowledge” on March 21, at 4 p.m. in the Rinker Auditorium, LBC 108.

Starkweather may be best known for inventing the laser printer while he worked for Xerox. He spent more than 43 years working in imaging sciences and holds over 44 patents in the fields of imaging, color and hardcopy devices. He was inducted into the Technology Hall of Fame in 2002, and in June 2012, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame by Invent Now and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

In May 1997, Starkweather joined Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Wash., and became an architect in Microsoft’s research department working on novel information hardware such as large displays and high resolution displays. While at Microsoft he authored several papers on displays and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems or MEMS technology. He also worked on optical security technology with other technology groups a Microsoft. Prior to joining Microsoft, Starkweather worked for  Apple Computer as an Apple Fellow involved in publishing and color imaging products and research.

Starkweather has received a number of awards for his work such as the Xerox President’s Achievement Award, the Johann Gutenberg Prize from the Society for Information Display, and the Engineering Excellence Award  and the David Richardson Medal both from the Optical Society of America.

This event is open to the Stetson community and the general public. Cultural credit will be available for students.
