Blackfish, football lead Stetson news coverage

With Stetson’s first football game in 56 years less than a month away, coverage for the sport continues to dominate chatter about Stetson online, in print and on air. Release of the movie Blackfish in local markets has spurred coverage as well since Stetson visiting professor John Jett appears in the film.   • Economic Development Quarterly, published by the Volusia County Economic Development Division, featured the return of Stetson football on the cover of its third quarter edition. Other coverage of Stetson football: Stetson was featured in an article about the economic impact of football on DeLand and other municipalities, Aug. 1 in the West Volusia Beacon.   • Stetson is expecting a record enrollment this fall, according to an Aug. 3 article in the Daytona Beach News-Journal. The article quotes enrollment vice president Joel Bauman as saying that enhancements to facilities as well as football and women’s lacrosse contributed to the increase.
  • About.com reports on Aug. 6 that more than one-third of Stetson applicants will not be admitted while successful applicants tend to have solid SAT or ACT scores and a strong academic record. The site goes on to say that admission officials at Stetson also look at the rigor of high school academics, meaningful involvement in extracurricular activities and letters of recommendation.
  • Law Professor Charles Rose’s interview with Fox News radio about the Fort Hood court martial ran in media outlets throughout the country on Aug. 6 including WTAQ, KLBJ, WTAM and WGMD.

  • A Daytona Beach News-Journal story Aug. 5, on a new $30 million student housing project for Daytona Beach-area colleges mentions Stetson as one of the colleges that the apartment-like living will benefit.   • Col. Todd A. Heussner is the commander of the 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, according to Cnet.com on Aug. 3.
  • Bill Peck is beginning his 63rd year as a football coach according to an Orlando Sentinel article on Aug. 6. The assistant coach at Mount Dora High School played football for Stetson and graduated in 1951.
  • On Aug. 6 Bay News 9 ran a story about St. Petersburg mayoral candidates, including Law alumnus Rick Kriseman.
  • The Aug. 8 Daily Tribune News features Law alumnus and Bartow County Superior Court Judge Carey Nelson.
