Final Hurricane Ian Update, 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2

Stetson University’s DeLand campus will return to normal operations on Monday, Oct. 3. This will be the final Hurricane Ian update from the Emergency Management Team and Policy Team.

Campus Conditions / Reopening
Duke Energy hopes to completely restore power to the DeLand campus on Sunday. Already on Sunday morning, electrical service has returned to House F, the Hillel House, the Cross-Cultural Center and other buildings on Bert Fish Drive. Power also has been restored to the Plymouth Apartments.

Campus to Resume Normal Operations Monday
Employees who are able should plan to return to work on Monday.

We understand employees may face challenges returning to work due to issues with storm damage at home, loss of power, providing childcare during school closures, and other issues associated with Ian. If you are experiencing a challenge, please communicate with your supervisor to arrange an accommodation. Each situation is case specific, but we are using flexibility as our guiding principle. If you need further assistance, you may contact Chela Dufour at [email protected] or a general HR team member at 386-822-8710 or via email at [email protected].

Classes This Week
Undergraduate classes and Counselor Education graduate classes will largely be moved online for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, given the upcoming Fall Break (with no classes Thursday and Friday) and issues related to Hurricane Ian.

Provost Noel Painter, PhD, announced the extension of some academic deadlines on Sunday, such as for students to drop a course without academic penalty. A decision will be made by the end of this week on scheduling make-up storm days at the end of the semester.

Campus Services

Dining Services has resumed normal hours in the Lynn Dining Commons. The Coffee Shop will close at 8 p.m. Sunday. Hatter StrEats and Einstein Bros. Bagels are closed Sunday. All locations hope to resume normal hours Monday.

• The Hollis Center is open Sunday from 1-5 p.m. and will resume regular hours on Monday. The pool is closed through Wednesday.

• The duPont-Ball Library reopened Sunday.

This concludes our Hurricane Ian updates.

Oct. 2 Update: A Message from the Provost

Faculty and Staff,

As there are thousands of people throughout DeLand still without power, many who live locally remain without access to comfortable temperatures and a reliable internet connection. Hopefully, your homes will come back online soon. If you are able to make it to campus, you do have access to conditioned space and Wi-Fi in all academic buildings there.

As we continue to put the various pieces in place to resume campus activities, here are a few other items pertinent to next week:

  •  Academic advising begins on Monday, October 3, in advance of registration for spring that starts on October 24.  That broad window for advising will remain in place, and we do not plan on delaying registration.
  • The midterm deadline, currently listed as 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 5, will be delayed by one week and is now 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12.
  • Student deadlines: the deadlines for students to a) drop a course without academic penalty, b) select the pass/fail option, and c) withdraw from all courses with a grade of “W” all trail the input of midterm grades by one week. Therefore, those course-registration-related deadlines (which are all currently listed as being Wednesday, October 12) will also be delayed by one week and are now Wednesday, October 19.
  • Faculty summer grant submissions are scheduled to be due on Monday, October 3.  Consistent with the changes above, that deadline is being extended by one week. The new due date is Monday, October 10.

Lastly, as we prepare to return to the classroom in some shape or form this week, I want to acknowledge the huge toll—physical and emotional—of the last week on all of us. For our students, staff and faculty still without power after three days, the annoyance of hot rooms and seeing neighbor’s power return while having still-dark homes easily sparks frustration. For those with damaged roofs and downed trees, it is tough to focus on work while homes are in disarray. And for all of us, there is an emotional labor that we have been facing from uncertainty about the storm, our family’s safety, property damage, evacuation and return, and access to what is needed to promote learning that is immense … and doesn’t stop just because power is restored, classes resume, or floodwaters recede.

We recognize that this week’s activities in and out of the (mostly virtual) classroom will look different depending on your circumstances, and we acknowledge that everyone is doing the best they can in an extraordinary—but temporary—period of disruption. Even while we are still recovering ourselves, our students especially are relying on us to be stable, calming, communicative and supportive this coming week. Thank you for continuing to display grace and understanding for those around you, and for shepherding our students’ education with true caring.

Noel Painter, PhD
Executive Vice President and Provost

11 a.m. Update for Friday, Sept. 30:

Campus Conditions

Electricity has been restored to most of the DeLand campus. The university’s cooling plant is operating and providing air-conditioning to buildings, although not yet at full capacity.

Facilities Management staff are checking all campus buildings for damage, including water intrusion. Public Safety officers are checking the fire safety systems and ensuring they are in proper working order before students, faculty and staff can safely return to campus.

Public Safety has moved back into its office at 405 N. Amelia Ave. and can be reached 24/7 at 386-822-7300.

Information Technology reports that its systems are operating as normal and Wi-Fi is available, wherever there is power on campus.

Stetson will issue further guidance to students, faculty and staff after Facilities Management and Public Safety are able to fully assess campus conditions. Until then, students, faculty, staff and others who are not already on campus are asked to please stay away from campus until it is fully restored.

Other Campus Services

Stetson Dining Services will serve brunch to students remaining on campus today in the Lynn Dining Commons from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner from 5-7 p.m. Dining Services expects to resume normal hours in the Commons on Saturday and Sunday.

The Hollis Center will reopen today. Hours for today, Saturday and Sunday are 1 – 5 p.m. The pool is closed.

Classes Next Week

Given the upcoming Fall Break (with no classes Thursday and Friday next week), the current uncertainty about the restoration of power to the entire campus, and the challenges of traveling back to DeLand after the storm, we are announcing that undergraduate classes and Counselor Education graduate classes will largely be moved online for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

In cases where in-person instruction is possible and desirable, students who are not able to engage in-person for whatever reason will have access to an alternate manner of class engagement. For those students who are able to return next week, we look forward to the faculty, coach, advisor and staff interactions that are a hallmark of a Stetson experience, as well as the restarting of vibrant co-curricular activities across campus.  And for those students who are unable to be back in DeLand next week, we are committed to fostering meaningful progress for you in your classes next week and eager to see you back on campus after Fall Break!

This is the 4 p.m. update for Thursday, Sept. 29:

As Hurricane Ian moves away from the area, everybody who remained on the DeLand campus is safe, including the approximately 327 students and 22 Resident Assistants in the residence halls, Public Safety officers, other essential personnel and President Christopher F. Roellke in the President’s House.

Keep up with Hurricane Ian updates and the forecast track at the National Hurricane Center.

Campus Conditions

Most of the campus lost electricity Wednesday night, although the power remains on at the Stetson Oaks Apartment, Stetson Palms Apartments and Plymouth Apartments on the north end of campus.

Duke Energy has not provided an estimate yet of when electricity will be restored. Please note that once power is restored, it can take half a day or more to return the campus to normal conditions. We will reopen the campus when we determine that the campus is safe and we have reactivated electricity, fire safety systems and HVAC.

Until then, the Carlton Union Building and Lynn Business Center are operating on generators.  Students who remained on campus and lost power in their residence halls have already begun relocating today to those buildings. The CUB has electricity, while the LBC has electricity and air-conditioning. Students are being asked to please stay inside those buildings and do not leave campus.

Public Safety is reporting downed debris, tree limbs and trees around campus and on surrounding roadways, as well as some minor flooding. In addition, Volusia County reports historic flooding in the area and has extended its curfew until 7 a.m. Friday.

Public Safety asks students, faculty, staff and others to please stay away from campus until electricity is restored, and they complete a damage assessment and can ensure campus conditions are safe. We will announce when it is safe to return to campus.

Stetson Dining provided dinner to about 400 students on Wednesday evening and also provided each of them with three boxed meals to eat on Thursday. Food service in the Commons will resume Friday with:

  • brunch from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. and dinner from 5-7 p.m.

Dining Services hopes to resume normal hours in the Commons on Saturday and Sunday.

The next update will be issued on Friday, Sept. 29, by 4 p.m.

Update for Wednesday, Sept. 28:

Stetson University’s Emergency Management Team and Policy Team are meeting daily at 12:30 p.m. and will issue an update to the community by 4 p.m. Keep up with the latest updates through your Stetson email, on Stetson Today and the Stetson University Facebook page.

This is the 4 p.m. update for Wednesday, Sept. 28:

Hurricane Ian is expected to be downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane or a tropical storm by the time it moves through Volusia County.

  • The storm already is beginning to impact our area and is expected to intensify this evening through late Thursday afternoon before leaving the area.
  • Significant wind and rain are forecast, and flooding can be expected in the DeLand area.
  • For the latest information about the storm, please check the National Hurricane Center.

Most Stetson students have left the DeLand campus to return home or seek shelter with friends and family elsewhere. Currently, 327 students remain on campus in the residence halls, including international students and out-of-state students who were unable to return home. In addition, 22 Resident Assistants (RAs) are staying with them in the residence halls. Students are being told to stay in place and remain inside their residence halls from this evening until Hurricane Ian passes through the area late Thursday.

Given the forecast, Stetson Dining:

  • Will provide dinner service in the Lynn Dining Commons this evening from 5-6:15 p.m. Dinner will be served in to-go containers, allowing students to pick up a meal and return to their residence hall.
  • Will distribute three boxed meals to students for Thursday as the Commons will be closed due to the storm.
  • Will provide meals to every student on campus, regardless of whether they have a meal plan or not.

Stetson’s Office of Public Safety has relocated to Room 429 of the Lynn Business Center, which has a generator in case the power goes out. Public Safety can be reached 24/7 by phone at 386-822-7300.

If there is a Power Outage:

In the event that the residence halls lose power for an extended period, Stetson administrators and Public Safety will determine after the storm passes if it is safe to reopen our two large buildings on the DeLand campus with generators, the Carlton Union Building and the Lynn Business Center, which would have electricity and Wi-Fi. For halls without power, students should plan to take what they need with them to these locations, including medications, a pillow and blanket, as access to return to the residence halls may be reduced. Students will receive an all-clear text message if and when such a move becomes available.

Local Curfew / Shelters

Volusia County has imposed a curfew from 8 p.m. tonight to 7 a.m. Thursday, and again from 8 p.m. Thursday until 7 a.m. Friday. The county also has opened four shelters, which all accept pets. Those staying at a shelter with their pets must bring necessary pet items and supplies.

The next update will be issued Thursday, Sept. 29, by 4 p.m.

4 p.m. Hurricane Ian Daily Update, Tuesday, Sept. 27

Stetson University Residential Housing in DeLand remains open for students. However, Hurricane Ian is moving on a more easterly route and may come closer than previously thought.

Local emergency services are preparing for potential winds of 74-110 mph on Thursday into Friday and heavy rains of 8-15 inches are expected. Our area is under a Tropical Storm Warning. For updates and the latest forecast track for Hurricane Ian, please check the National Hurricane Center.

As Hurricane Ian crosses our area, there may be significant disruptions in power, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. (There are no generators in residential buildings.) Police, emergency services and medical assistance may be limited. Dining may only be able to offer limited services. Going outside of your residential building may not be possible due to storm conditions for more than 24 hours.

Therefore, students who can safely return home or shelter with family or friends elsewhere may be more comfortable doing so and are always encouraged to make their own decisions for their own safety.

At this time, both the Carlton Union Building and Lynn Business Center are on a generator in the event there is a power outage. Public Safety will relocate to LBC Room 429 on Wednesday, and local shelters are available starting Wednesday. (More information below.)

  • The Commons will open:
    • On Wednesday for breakfast from 8-10 a.m.; lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; and dinner from 5-7 p.m.
    • On Thursday, the Commons will be closed during the storm. But students will be able to pick up three boxed meals on Wednesday evening during dinner service to eat on Thursday.
    • On Friday for brunch from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and dinner from 5-7 p.m.

Dining Services hopes to resume normal hours in the Lynn Dining Commons on Saturday and Sunday, as the impact of the storm becomes clearer.

  • Thursday: Closed
  • Friday: 1-5 p.m.

·         The Hand Art Center is closed Wednesday through Saturday.

·         Athletics is cancelling all outdoor activities on Wednesday and Thursday. Teams scheduled to travel are making plans to leave as early as possible. Tennis on Saturday and Sunday also has been canceled.

DeLand Staff,

Good morning.  I wanted to update you with this brief message regarding conversations and planning related to Hurricane Ian:

  • Stetson University’s Gulfport and Tampa campuses will be closed Tuesday through Thursday of this week.  Law classes are cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Depending on the impact of the storm, classes will be moved to online modality for Thursday, and possibly Friday as well (again, this is Law only).
  • For the DeLand campus, the Emergency Management Team (EMT) is monitoring the storm forecast, as well as decisions made by Volusia County and other regional universities.  As of earlier this morning, we are only aware of moves by Bethune-Cookman; other Orlando- and Daytona-area universities have not announced a change in their normal operations.
  • All EMT groups are meeting today, as are the deans and provost, for further consideration of potential actions this week.  You can expect additional announcements this afternoon sent to students, staff, and faculty.
