The Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center proudly invites the public to its Fall 2024 premier exhibitions: The Economics of Oscar Bluemner’s Art, curated by Katya Kudryavtseva, PhD, and memento nos: Migration and Movement in America, curated by Eric Andre and Natália Marques da Silva, PhD.

On view until Oct. 9, memento nos brings together contemporary artists Alejandra Abad, Eric Andre, Gary Monroe, Jan Padios, Rosemond Nyamewaa Van-Ess and Ross Junior Owusu. Representing different parts of the world, the group is joined by additional artists featured in Routes, a complementary audiovisual installation about memory.

Through themes like cultural connection and memories of displacement, memento nos celebrates the triumphs and challenges of forging new bonds through migration. For Ghanaian-born co-curator Eric Andre, it’s also a chance to debut a new body of work that has never been seen before. You can learn more during the exhibit’s reception, taking place on Sept. 6, 6-8 p.m. (cultural credit and refreshments available!).

On view until Dec. 7, the second exhibition on display features Oscar Bluemner (1867-1938) and a special contribution by Stetson faculty Leah Sandler. Shedding light on the “manifold nature of the dialogue of art and money,” showcases the most prized and sought out pieces of Vera Bluemner Kouba Collection.

In this novel approach to Bluemner, a permanent fixture at the Hand, curator Katya Kudryavtseva, PhD invites visitors to consider both symbolic and monetary value of art by exploring “how Bluemner’s artistic legacy was cemented as his works came into contact with the mechanisms of the art market.” Also a cultural credit opportunity, Katya’s Curator Talk will take place on Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.

While art exhibitions at the Hand are typically planned years in advance, the contents of the next exhibition are a mystery. That’s because submissions to the 35th Annual Student Juried Exhibition are still being accepted! Visit the Hand’s submission portal to learn more.

The Hand Art Center is open Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., Mondays by appointment. Closed during national and University holidays.
