Stetson in the News: Nov. 15-Dec. 18, 2024



• On Nov. 15, Chris Ferguson, PhD, professor of Psychology, was included in “Adolescent mental health and social media: between scientific doubts and growing limitations,” published by World Today News. Ferguson also was included in “Evidence for social media harm doesn’t hold up,” published Nov. 24 in The Medical Republic and other outlets. In addition, he authored “The problem with vibes-based cellphone reporting,” published Dec. 18 in Phi Delta Kappan.

• On Nov. 26, Rajni Shankar-Brown, PhD, professor and Jessie Ball duPont Endowed Chair of Social Justice Education, was featuerd in the article “Food insecurity is a community problem,” published by The West Volusia Beacon. Shankar-Brown also was featured in “Florida program will send struggling readers free books to boost literacy,” published Dec. 3 by Central Florida Public Media.
• Wendy Anderson, PhD, professor and chair of Environmental Science and Studies, was prominently cited in “Expert says Orange City housing project a potential flood risk to nearby homes,” published Dec. 16 by Spectrum News 13.

• Following the Presidential election, alumni put a spotlight on Stetson and the College of Law as they were selected to join the Trump administration. Among others, articles included “Pam Bondi, Trump’s pick for attorney general, is a longtime loyalist” (Nov. 21) and “Umatilla Grad Dr. Janette Nesheiwat Selected by Trump as U.S. Surgeon General” (Dec. 3). Nesheiwat, a former Stetson student who graduated elsewhere, is the sister of alumna Julia Nesheiwat, who was featured in “Julia Nesheiwat: The Jordanian-American wife of Trump’s incoming national security advisor,” published by several media outlets. In addition, the university experienced a marked surge in social media mentions during the latter part of November.
• Alumna Nancy Kerner-Durling was featured as part of “Meet the winners of the NC Symphony’s Music Educator Awards for 2024,” published by EducationNC on Nov. 19.
• On Dec. 5, Ashley Goggins, an alumna of both Stetson and Stetson Law, was featured in the article “Pro bono: Ashley Goggins: ‘I do pro bono work because it brings me fulfillment,’” published by the Jacksonville Daily Record.
• On Dec. 9, alumna Janelle Vilonen was included in “The Top 50 Women Leaders of Buffalo for 2024,” published by Women We Admire.
• Alumna Jill Shipley was featured Dec. 12 in “Selling your business? What every entrepreneur should know as they prepare for the sale,” published by D Magazine. At Stetson, Shipley also co-developed the country’s first academic major in Family Business and was an adjunct professor teaching family business courses.

• On Dec. 13, DeLand, where Stetson is located, was featured as part of “7 Small Towns in Florida With the Best Downtown Areas,” published by WorldAtlas. Also, DeLand was included in WorldAtlas’ “10 Towns in Florida that Transport You to the Past” on Dec. 14.
• On Dec. 17, as part of Fox 35’s Good Morning Orlando show, students were showcased under the title “Stetson University horn quartet performs.” Kathy Thomas, adjunct professor of Music, Horn also appeared on the show.
