Stetson’s Foreman Biodiversity Lecture tackles climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems
Stetson University College of Law’s Foreman Biodiversity Lecture by Dr. Max Finlayson on Nov. 9 presented “Climate Change Impacts on Coastal Ecosystems— Evidence from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and Mangroves.”
Dr. Finlayson directs the Institute for Land, Water and Society at Charles Sturt University in Australia.

“The major takeaway is that climate change is occurring now,” said Dr. Finlayson. “It isn’t just something that will occur in the future. It’s happening now and we need to take actions now that include getting involved in national and international policy measures to actually try to stop climate change so we have a chance to repair or maintain our ecosystems.”
Stetson’s Foreman Biodiversity Lecture series is coordinated through the Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy, which is the recipient of the 2016 American Bar Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award in Environmental Law and Policy.
The Nov. 9 Foreman Biodiversity Lecture was presented in conjunction with the annual ELI-Stetson Wetlands Workshop on “Conserving the Coasts: The State of Marine Ecosystems and Coastal Compensatory Mitigation” with presenters from Charles Sturt University in Australia, the University of South Florida College of Marine Science, Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Ecosystem Investment Partners, NOAA, the City of St. Petersburg, Environmental Law Institute and Stetson University. The event began with a field trip to local aquatic restoration sites led by Tampa Bay Watch. David Urban of Ecosystem Investment Partners provided the keynote address.

The Environmental and Land Use Law Section of the Florida Bar and Mechanik Nuccio Hearne & Wester, P.A. co-sponsored the workshop.
