Judge likely to give pair death; Jury’s recommendations usually followed at sentencing

Professor Robert Batey spoke with Patricio Bolona at the Daytona Beach News Journal about whether the judge will follow the jury’s recommendation to put two of three men convicted of beating six people and a dog to death in Deltona over an Xbox will be put to death per the jury’s instruction. The jury suggested life in prison for the third man convicted in this crime.

Professor Roberta Flowers agreed to talk with St. Petersburg Times reporter Chris Tisch regarding some specific financial guidelines outlined for lawyers, trust account requirements, and standards required of attorneys. Tisch is researching the potential of doing a story about a lawyer who has no trust account who is a candidate for a judicial position.

Professor Michael Allen joined Kathy Fountain’s “Your Turn” panel this afternoon in the Fox studios to discuss the implication of municipalities adopting strict illegal immigration ordinances. The first ordinance popped up in Hazelton, Pa., Avon Park, Fla., and other cities are considering similar measures.

Sports Authority to appeal Pat-down ruling

Professor James Fox spoke with Tampa Bay’s 10 on campus this afternoon regarding the likelihood of a federal appeal in the “pat down” suit against the Tampa Bay Bucs. A federal judge Friday upheld a ban on security pat-downs outside Raymond James Stadium before Tampa Bay Buccaneers games, ruling the practice violates the constitutional rights of fans. The piece airs on Channel 10 at 6 p.m. this evening.

Professor Charles Rose spoke with Mike Gentine with radio wire service Florida Radio Networks this afternoon regarding the decision in the highly publicized Xbox murders in Deltona, Fla. in which all three defendants were found guilty in the murder of six people.

Professor Rose joined Kathy Fountain’s panel at 12:30 p.m. for the Fox 13 “Your Turn” program discussing the Jessica Lunsford Act.

Professor Paul Boudreaux agreed to start a dialogue with Bradenton Herald reporter Donna Wright, who is working on a story about developments in the Tallevast case. Residents of Tallevast have filed suit against Lockheed Martin Corp., which is responsible for cleaning up a plume of pollution from a beryllium plant that covers over 200 acres. A hearing took place today in Manatee County.

Professor Rebecca Morgan agreed to talk with Bridget McCrea at the Maddux Business Report early next week to discuss the new elder-friendly Eleazer Courtroom and plans and programs for the future of the courtroom on campus.
