Juried Student Art winners announced

Fifteen Stetson students received awards at the opening reception for Stetson University’s 22nd Juried Student Art Exhibition on Nov. 11. The award winning works of art (59 pieces) are currently being displayed at the Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center now through Dec. 9. The Hand Art Center is located on the University’s Palm Court/Quad, 139 E. Michigan Ave., DeLand.

Exhibition judge Tim Ludwig made the decisions for all but two of the awards—the Students’ Choice Award and the Friends of Art Purchase Award. Ludwig, an award-winning studio potter, taught ceramics classes for 34 years in Florida public schools and three years at the college level. He has also conducted workshops throughout the U.S., and served on the National Curriculum Board for the Getty Foundation.

The awards presented, comprising over $4,100 in cash and prizes, were as follows:

Ann Hall Best of Show Award – Troy Norton (clay and glaze)

Friends of Art Purchase Award – Troy Norton (clay and glaze)

Students’ Choice Award – Troy Norton (mixed media)

Charlene Thomas Award of Excellence – Megan Sit (wood sculpture)

Li-Hung Catron Award of Distinction – Michael Johnpoll (Quicktime movie)

Express Printing Award of Distinction – Ashleigh Stuart (oil painting)

Rich & Lilis George Award of Distinction – Taylor Gunderson (clay)

Old Spanish Sugar Mill Award of Distinction – Brittany Mann (mixed media)

Paul & Elkind, P.A. Award of Distinction – Jane Horton (gouache & encaustic on panel)

Speedway Custom Photo Lab Award of Distinction – Samantha Lamprecht (photograph)

Katharine Hansen Award to a Non-Art Major – Dorianne Hahn (mixed media)

Stetson’s Hand Art Center is home to Stetson’s extensive collection of artworks by Oscar Bluemner (1867-1938), bequeathed to Stetson by the artist’s daughter, Vera Bluemner Kouba. Hand Art Center is open to the public, free of charge, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; closed weekends and national and university holidays. The Juried Student Art Exhibition and the current Bluemner exhibition, Oscar Bluemner in Black and White: Newly Conserved Works from the Vera Bluemner Kouba Collection, both continue through Dec. 9.
