The Week Ahead in Hatter Country

Mid-terms are over; spring is in the air. And there is a plethora of events available next week for Stetson’s DeLand campus and the surrounding communities. With events spanning many cultures—French operas, Russian elections, Caribbean cuisine—to community service, sports events and just plain fun things to do, this week’s calendar offers something for everyone! Here are some highlights for the week ahead, March 23 to March 30:

In the world of Music: Don’t miss the School of Music’s Opera Theatre presentation of two hilarious French operas, Angélique by Jacques Ibert, and Les Mamelles deTirésias by Francis Poulenc, 7:30 Friday, March 23; and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in the DeLand High School Auditorium… The other musical concerts this week will be performed in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall, including the Woodwind Ensembles on Tuesday, March 27, the Student Composers Concert  on Friday, March 30 and the Percussion Ensembles concert Saturday, March 31. 

In the world of Athletics: We hope to see you at the Athletics Expansion Groundbreaking Celebration at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 23 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. This event celebrates the return of Hatter Football, introduction of Women’s Lacrosse, Stetson’s outstanding Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs and the new on-campus facilities being constructed…  Enjoy the outdoors and support your Hatters at this week’s home competitions for Softball, Women’s and Men’s Tennis and Women’s Golf. Stetson Days of Service: The third annual Doug Lee Day of Service is Saturday, March 24 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It’s open to the public upon RSVP. Meet at the Rinker Auditorium, LBC before 11 a.m. Contact the Center for Community Engagement at (386) 822-8709 to reserve your space…  Meet in the CUB Circle at 4 p.m. Friday, March 23 to participate in Stetson’s community engagement program, Into The Streets…  Kaleidoscope is sponsoring By Your Nature Charity Fashion Show, from 8-10 p.m. Friday, March 23—a night of eco-friendly clothing, great music, food and fun, and all proceeds will be donated to TransYouth Family Allies…  Be a part of Stetson’s new teaching landscape at Save a Sandhill Ecosystem 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at the Rinker Environmental Learning Center, adjacent to Gillespie Museum…  On Saturday, March 24, Tri Delta’s 16th Annual Golf Tournament in Rock Springs Ridge in Apopka, is a benefit with proceeds going to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Movie Nights: ACM Spring 2012 presents ‘Star Trek: Insurrection’ 7:45-10 p.m. Friday, March 23…  ‘Princess Mononoke’ Movie Event sponsored by the Anime Club, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, with discussion following.

Combat the gender wage gap in the U.S., and attend the Start Smart Workshop from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, providing college women with the tools and information necessary to successfully negotiate an appropriate and deserved salary.

Putin Win! Dr. Gene Huskey is opening up his class on Russian Politics for us to witness Presidential Elections Russian-Style, 2:30-3:45 p.m. Thursday, March 29 in Rinker Environmental Learning Center. Students will analyze the March 4, 2012 presidential election in Russia in a multi-media presentation. Russian tea and sweets will be served.

Celebrate the Caribbean culture at Carnival 2012 from 6 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday, March 30, featuring Caribbean food, music and history.

Continuing: Uma Coisa Into Anothera retrospective of Stetson Poet Terri Witek and visual artist Cyriaco Lopes’ collaborative work will continue through March 30 in the Hand Art Center…  Ross Allen and Florida Natural History: A Photographic Exhibition will continue through April 12 at Gillespie Museum, and Concentrated Color: Watercolors by Oscar Bluemner from the Vera Bluemner Kouba Collection will remain up through May 2 in the Hand Art Center.
