Commencement in the news

Graduate Alex Sanchez addresses the Class of 2012 at the Arts & Sciences ceremony.

The success stories of two Stetson University 2012 graduates – Tuyet “Hannah” Nyugen and Alex Sanchez – were featured this week in the Daytona Beach News-Journal story, “Struggles of foreign-born Stetson students made them strong.”

That story is among several news placements related to Spring Commencement. Graduation was also well-covered in social media. Here is an overview of the news coverage and sampling of social media placements:

  • Both Nguyen and Sanchez were first-generation graduates, and both are planning careers serving others. Read the inspiring Daytona Beach News-Journal story about them. The story ran on May 11 and provided a preview of Commencement.
  • Sanchez, who has accepted a teaching position with Volusia County Schools, was also featured in the West Volusia edition of Hometown News on May 11. The native of Puerto Rico could not speak English when he moved to Deltona, Fla., at age 12. He was named a Bonner Scholar at Stetson and started volunteering at Woodward Avenue Elementary School as part of his community service and decided to become a teacher.
  • Graduates Tyce Herrman and Francis Sams received news coverage for their upcoming cross-country bicycle ride for the Bike & Build organization. The pair was featured May 13 in Herrman’s hometown newspaper, the Morris (Ill.) Daily Herald, and also on May 11 in the Hometown News.
  • Four graduates who studied music education were highlighted in the Daytona Beach News-Journal May 14 for successfully completing their Teacher Education internships. They are Kate Nadolny, Rachel Sensenig, Carl Shafer and Shane Thomas.
  • Graduate Alexandra Dobbs reflected on Commencement Day in her blog, Design + Obsessed. The post, “A Life-Changing Weekend,” includes celebratory photos and fashion tips for future grads.
  • The Daytona Beach News-Journal ran a gallery of photos from the
  • College of Arts & Sciences’ Commencement ceremony.

Many of Stetson’s own photos from both Commencement ceremonies can be found (and downloaded) on flickr. And, in case you missed it earlier in the week, read the Stetson Today overview of Commencement – featuring award-winners and Q&As with 15 of this year’s outstanding graduates.
