James Thaler, visiting assistant professor of the School of Business Administration who directs the dual degree J.D./M.B.A. program at Stetson University College of Law, tried on a new leadership role Thursday evening in Gulfport. Professor Thaler,  a Gulfport resident and  graduate of  both Stetson’s school of business and the law school, has begun his term as  the new president of the St. Petersburg Bar Association. He introduced himself to bar members at an installation and reception in Stetson Law’s Great Hall on June 11.

Thaler is a practicing attorney who is active in the community. He is a member of the board of directors of the  newly incorporated nonprofit  Gulfport Arts Center, developed to encourage arts education and cultural events. He is also a member of the State/Federal Judicial Liaison Committee of the Florida Bar’s Business Law Section and is a certified diversity trainer through the Center for Professionalism.  Thaler is past-president of the St. Petersburg Bar Foundation and has chaired the Solo, Small Firm and Practice Management Section of the St. Petersburg Bar Association. He has also served on the executive committee of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Thaler also served on the Professionalism Committee of the Florida Bar and served as both president-elect and secretary of the St. Petersburg Bar Association.

Thaler teaches courses at Stetson in business, and lectures on a wide variety of subjects, including diversity,  professionalism, ethics, estate-planning and elder law.
