My name is Robert T. Murch. I was in the Stetson class of 1968. Unfortunately, I had to leave school before completion. In 1968, Uncle Sam thought I was better suited for the military than college life. After leaving school in Jan 68, I joined the US Navy. My 3+ years of college education provided me the opportunity to get involved in cryptology. They sent me to school (back in FL, no less). My (Communications Technician) training finished in April 69. My entire class was sent to The National Security Agency at Ft Meade, MD. That is where I spent the rest of my 4 year enlistment. While there, I worked on large scale mainframe computers as an operator, then as an operations supervisor. In June of 1970, I married my girl from back home in Maine, then she joined me in MD. The Washington/Baltimore area was a great place for a 2-year honeymoon. In August 1972, I completed my military obligation and we headed back to Maine. I was planning to return to college to earn my degree, but soon found out that there was a great demand in Maine for people with large-scale mainframe computer experience.

Shortly after returning home, I went to work for the Maine Department of Labor as a Computer Operations Supervisor. With help from the GI Bill, I went back to college (U Maine) at night and earned my BS in Computer Science. With that degree, I was qualified to move into systems and programming. The bottom line is that I spent 32 1/2 years with the Dept of Labor, retiring in Oct 2005 as a Systems Team Leader/Data Base application designer. During all that time, we raised 2 great sons, who are both married and each have 2 children. Both sons and their wives are college graduates and each are lucky to be working in their chosen fields. Doris and I celebrated our 40th anniversary last June 6th.
