Deceased: 2001-02-10

My late husband, James “Jim” Richter (1943-2001), served in Song Be, Vietnam, in 1969-70. While there, he received numerous awards, including the Bronze Star. After active duty service, he remained in the Army Reserves, reaching the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Army Medical Service Corps.

While a Stetson student, Jim was active in many organizations including: accounting honorary, L Club, varsity soccer, Student Union Board, sailing club, and Pershing Rifles. During his Senior Year, Jim served as the Commanding Officer of Headquarters Company. After receiving his B.B.A. from Stetson, Jim continued his education at the University of Florida where he received his M.B.A. degree in Health and Hospital Administration.

Following his stint in the Army, Jim was employed in Arkansas as a hospital administrator where he earned admission as a fellow in the American College of Hospital Administrators. Jim was active in professional, community, and church organizations. He belonged to Rotary International, was Senior Warden of his church, served as Cub Scout Pack Master, and was the chairman of the Northeast Hospital District (Arkansas). During this time, he was listed in Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Notable Americans of the Bicentennial Era, and Outstanding Young Men of America. Eventually, Jim returned to Stetson for a fifth year of accounting and received his license as a Certified Public Accountant.

For the next 20 years of his life, Jim remained in DeLand where he was employed in corporate accounting. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, The Loyal Order of Moose, a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, and was a Director of the DeLand Museum of Art. For a number of years Jim was employed by Stetson University. Although he continued to live in DeLand, at the time of his death, Jim was the comptroller for the Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville. In 2001, while at home in DeLand, he suffered a massive, fatal heart attack.
