Class of: 1972
Brick: yes

I was born on Long Island, NY, but my family moved to Sarasota, FL, when I was 9 years old. I became interested in accounting and was drawn to the highly acclaimed accounting program at Stetson in 1968, which was Chaired by Professor Joseph Masters, CPA. I also enrolled in Army ROTC. On campus I was active in SGA (Business School Senator and Co-chair Green Feather Week), SUB Treasurer (2 terms), Men’s Judiciary Council, New Residence Board President, Alpha Kappa Psi (Master of Rituals), Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and ROTC Scabbard & Blade.

Following graduation with a B.S. in Accounting, I completed summer camp at Ft Bragg, NC, and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in July 1972. I immediately received Army orders to report to Ft Lee, VA for active duty for training in Quartermaster (QM). I completed active duty and reserve commitments in 1980 and resigned my commission at the rank of Captain. While fulfilling my Army Reserve commitment, I joined PwC, an international CPA firm, in the audit practice in Miami. Within a few years, I specialized in the healthcare field working with hospitals. In 1979, I was named National Technical Director and transferred into the Firm’s national practice based in Chicago, IL.

After 5 years, I relocated to Houston, TX to join AMI, a Fortune 500 public company which owned 135 hospitals nationally. I was married in Chicago and my first daughter was born there. My second daughter was born in Houston. I was involved in school related activities for both daughters throughout their school years. My oldest daughter was a national cheerleading finalist and state champion while my younger daughter played trumpet in the high school marching band, which won the national championship title, and then she subsequently played trumpet in the Texas Fighting Aggie Band, Texas A&M University. I joined Amherst Associates, a national healthcare consulting practice as a Regional Vice President and shareholder and opened the Houston office. Two years later we merged with E&Y. Within a few years I was named a Principal and assumed leadership over the national healthcare regulatory practice which I lead for 12 years. This was the largest consulting practice in the nation involved in healthcare regulatory matters. In 2002, I formed Loria Associates, a healthcare consulting firm which I continue to manage to this day. I relocated to Lake Conroe, TX in 2010 where I’m fortunate to continue consulting from my lakefront home office. I’ve published over 65 articles, letters and papers in regional and national professional journals; contributed a chapter to a book and published my ACHE Fellowship thesis. My speaking and teaching includes more than 100 national, regional and local programs for professional groups, clients and internal education courses. I’ve been active in Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), Fellow in American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), Fellow in American Academy of Medical Administrators (AAMA), professional CPA societies in Florida, Illinois and Texas, Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) and American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA). My civic/government and charitable experiences include Board member roles with Ponderosa YMCA, National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of SE Texas, Advisory Board for the Graduate Program in Healthcare Administration for Texas Woman’s University (TWU), Houston CPA Society technical and charitable committees, Municipal Utility District No. 20 as Director and Investment Officer and currently Board and Treasurer of Riverstone Pointe Property Owners Association. I served on Stetson’s Alumni committee and was Fundraising Chairman of the 15th year Class of ’72 Reunion.

A few photos are attached which include days attending Stetson both in ROTC uniform and everyday attire. One photo is of me in July 1972 when I was commissioned 2nd Lt. Then there are two recent photos (2014) of me in my fraternity jersey and in a business suit. I’m thankful for the culture of strong values and excellent educational experiences at Stetson University. These experiences formed the foundation for my becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), business advisor, and successful business leader.
