I graduated from Stetson in June 1968 with a B.A. in Political Science. My intention at that time was to enter the Foreign Service, but, of course, there were no deferments except for medical school. I entered Air Force Officers’ Training School in August of that year. In November, I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to Navigators’ School at Mather Air Force Base, Sacramento, California. Upon completing that training I was assigned as a navigator to a C-130E Hercules wing based at Dyess AFB, Abilene, Texas. Subsequently, I served as an infrared sensor operator on AC-130 (Spectre) gunships operating out of Ubon Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, where I gained an appreciation for Thai food and an aversion to being shot at.
