Congratulations to our Hunton Andrews Kurth moot court team!
The Hunton Andrews Kurth National Championship is the Super Bowl of all moot court competitions. The top 16 team from around the nation are invited to compete in this special three-day competition. The invitation is based off of Stetson’s performance in the 2020–2021 moot court season, and each year, the competition is intense. And at this year’s national championship, Stetson was once again, in the midst of it.
The team has been working on the record since mid-October. The record involved complex issues concerning class actions and general and personal jurisdiction. And for the fourth time, a Stetson team—Liz Kellar, Jessica Merker, and Peter Farrell—was recognized for not only their team performance but also for individual advocacy.
The team brought home a semifinalist award and a third-best oralist award (Jessica). It was a hard-fought battle—Stetson argued against GW, Seton Hall, NYU, and William and Mary, in the preliminary rounds, and Texas Tech, in the quarterfinal round, before losing by 0.18—yes, less than a quarter of point (heartbreaking in moot court competitions)—to Chicago-Kent in the semifinal round. Stetson has been invited to this championship ten times, and we have reached elimination rounds six times and been semifinalists four times. And four times, a Stetson advocate has been recognized as a best oralist.
Congratulations Liz, Jessica, and Peter!!!! And a very special thank you to the team’s co-coach, James Nealon for all his continued support of not only this moot court team, but several others. And thank you to Professor Virelli, Professor Flowers, and the attorneys who helped prepare the team.
Amazing job, team—congratulations!
