Need some non-legal pro bono hours? Keep reading!

Non-legal pro bono opportunity this weekend, July 6–7, by serving as a timer at the St. Pete Masters (SPM) long course swim meet.

SPM was established in 1970 by a Stetson alum—Judge Bob Beach. (And Judge Beach is planning to swim in the meet; he is 94 years old! Judge Beach graduated from Stetson in the late 1950s.) Masters swimming is for the young at heart, ages 18 and older!  At the last swim meet, two world records were broken! Hence the importance of timers.

Timers are needed for both the Saturday session (9:30 a.m. until roughly 3:30 p.m.) and the Sunday session (6:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.).  The session will begin with a timers’ meeting during which you will learn what you need to know to be a timer.  And volunteers will have their name entered into a daily drawing for a $25.00 gift certificate to Southern Steer Butcher. Free food, snacks, and beverages await our volunteers.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Professor Bowman, [email protected], as she is the meet director.

Stetson provides wireless access to all employees and students via the wireless network called eduroam. When you use this wireless network, you are awarded higher priority, more bandwidth and access to our printers in the Law Library.

If the StetsonGuest network has been added to your wireless configuration, please delete it. This will ensure that you are always connecting to the eduroam wireless network while on campus and prevent issues with on-campus printing.

Congratulations To the new Stetson Law Review Spring 2024 Associates

Congratulations to Our Orseck Team!

Please join me in congratulating our Orseck Moot Court team—Elizabeth Campbell, Mariana Monforte, and Benjamin Russell—on their performance at the 51st Annual Robert Orseck Memorial Moot Court Competition this week. The team argued two issues: one issue involved whether attorney-client privilege could be waived, and the other issue involved the interpretation of the phrase “other medium” in Florida Statute 770.01. Two very complex issues.

Before I tell you the results, a little more information is needed about this competition.

The Orseck competition takes place at the annual Florida Bar conference. And because of that, actual sitting judges from the trial courts and the district courts of appeal (DCA) join with attorneys to judge the preliminary, quarterfinal, and semifinal rounds. In fact, this year, there were DCA judges judging the very first preliminary round that the Stetson team argued in. And if that were not enough, one of the issues involved a certified conflict between the DCAs, and in one round, the judges from those specific courts were all represented on the same panel. (Great argument, Ben!)

Continuing on: And if a team advances to the final round, the advocates get an opportunity to argue in front of the justices of the Florida Supreme Court. An opportunity that very few Florida attorneys ever have an opportunity to do. Side note: In the 29 years that Stetson has participated in the competition, a Stetson team has been in the finals 19 times.

Now back to the announcement:

After preliminary rounds against Miami, FSU, and FIU, and a quarterfinal round against FAMU, and a semifinal round against Nova, our Stetson team faced off against Miami again (on opposite sides) for the final round. And the result?

The Stetson team WON the competition (Elizabeth and Mariana argued in the final round). This is the seventh time that Stetson has won the competition. AND there is more! The Justices of the Florida Supreme Court awarded Elizabeth the Best Oralist, Final Round. This is the eighth time that a Stetson advocate has won this award.

Congratulations, Elizabeth, Mariana, and Ben!

Go Stetson!
Professor Bowman

Zoom Bombing – What It Is and How to Prevent It

The term “Zoom bombing” gained notoriety at the start of COVID as our world transitioned online. Unfortunately, people (oftentimes hackers) have learned how to find open meetings and disrupt them. There are protections and ways to prevent a Zoom bombing incident from happening to your meeting. Fortunately, there are several ways to protect your Zoom meetings.

We understand the need to share some of the advanced features with your participants to allow interaction.  Zoom has added some suggestions to mitigate the chance that an unwelcome participant engages in disrupting behavior.

If you share your meeting link on social media or another public location, anyone with the link can join your meeting. You may, however, occasionally require a meeting link (for office hours, for instance) that is open to a broader community. Here are some tips you can use to help when public meeting space is necessary:

Zoom Meetings:

  • Avoid using your Personal Meeting ID (PMI) to host public events. Your PMI is essentially one continuous meeting, and people can pop in and out all the time. Learn more about meeting IDs.
  • Familiarize yourself with Zoom’s settings and features. Understand how to protect your virtual space when you need to. For example, the Waiting Room is a helpful feature for hosts to control who comes and goes.
  • Set up a password. A password adds an additional layer of security, one that may be useful for meetings outside of regular class hours. You may wish to share the password in your syllabus or direct emails to your students or classmates.
  • Disable attendees’ video. Hosts can turn anyone’s video off. This allows them to block unwanted, distracting, or inappropriate gestures on video.
  • Mute participants. Hosts can mute/unmute individual participants or all of them at once to block unwanted, distracting, or inappropriate noise. You can also enable Mute Upon Entry in your settings to reduce confusion in large meetings.

If you need help creating your meeting or need some additional tips on how to secure your event, please reach out to [email protected].

DO NOT WAIT: Renew your ADA Accommodations and ESL Testing Modifications for Summer 2024

DO NOT WAIT: Renew your ADA Accommodations and ESL Testing Modifications for Summer 2024.

After reviewing the renewal checklist on Registering For and Requesting Accommodations – College of Law (stetson.edu) webpages, log in to your Accommodate Student Portal with your Stetson credentials to renew your accommodations request for Summer 2024. (If you have not previously received ADA Accommodations and/or ESL Modifications and you want to submit a first-time request, please fill out the Accommodate Public Registration Form found on Stetson Law’s Accessibility Resources web page: Accessibility Resources for Students with Disabilities – College of Law (stetson.edu))

Students with accommodations or testing modifications must renew their request every term (Fall, Spring, Summer). This gives Accessibility Resources time to work collaboratively to ensure every student receives their needed accommodations; the College of Law does not provide retroactive accommodations. Here, you will see any accommodations you have been previously approved for and are currently eligible for renewal.

NOTE: Unless you receive a confirmation email from Accommodate that your request has been submitted, your request has not been properly submitted and you should reach out to the office of Accessibility Resources. Once your request is submitted, Accessibility Resources will process your request and you will receive your letter of accommodation or testing modification. It is from that date that accommodations will be in effect for the current term.

**A testing modification for foreign students is not considered a disability accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act in accordance with Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and ADA Amendments Act of 2008, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504, as amended).
