Community Service Opportunity 9.29.2023
Bay Area Legal Association are seeking students to help with an upcoming fundraising event to benefit Bay Area Legal Services. The event is being organized by the Krewe of Cavaliers, who hold quarterly fundraisers to benefit non-profit organizations.
Below is an outline of the event for the pro bono helpers:
Organization: Bay Area Legal Association
Non-legal supervisor: Jim Thaler
Total Hours Available and Date: 4 hours (6 PM to 10 PM) on Friday, September 29, 2023
Summary of Work: Directing attendees to the south Library parking lot on campus, directing attendees from the lot to the event location at 1522 Hull Street South (home of Jim and Kelly Thaler), and helping to register attendees. A minimum of 6 students would be appreciated.

Proceeds from this event will expand the veterans’ programs offered by Bay Area Legal Services, particularly to provide due process for veterans who received an unjust military discharge because of mental illness or discrimination. Bay Area Legal Services opened its doors in 1967 to provide free civil legal services to low-income Tampa Bay area residents by assisting individuals and nonprofit groups with limited access to legal services, resolving the legal problems of our clients, and preserving the independence, hope, and dignity of those we serve.
Locally, we serve over 1,700veterans and their families each year through our veterans’ programs. Some of the ways we help our veterans:
– Give veterans access to the mental and physical health benefits they need and were promised;
– Prevent homelessness among veterans;
– Defend veterans from scam artists and other unlawful threats to their quality of life;
– Maintain a vast network of partners to provide holistic care for veterans and our clients; and
– Advocate for veterans and their families on many other crucial legal matters.
