Congratulations, Dispute Resolution Board!
We had our first two competitions this past weekend, and there’s a lot to celebrate. First, our mediators! This weekend, Lauren Bishop and Kamila Waugh represented Stetson in the University of Houston Law Center National Mediator Competition, in which they were each the mediator, responsible for mediating among groups of UHLC first-year students who are also competing with one another as advocates and clients. They were coached by Stetson’s fantastic mediation coach, Professor Amy Catledge, a Stetson alumna. This is a particularly tough competition because the mediator is responsible for running the whole mediation, without a teammate. To be allowed to participate, the school must be able to attest that each mediator is sufficiently trained to be able to run an entire two-hour mediation without assistance. Like many contemporary mediations, this competition was wholly on-line, which also requires technical proficiency on the part of the mediator.
After two preliminary rounds in a field of excellent mediators from around the country, Kamila advanced, first to semifinals and then to the final round, where she finished as runner-up!
Not to be outdone were our negotiators! This weekend, Stetson sent three teams to Los Angeles to compete in the Southwestern National Negotiation Tournament. They were coached by our legendary negotiation coach Professor James Sheehan and Coach Kylie Weaver, herself a highly decorated advocate from the class of ’22.
Our three teams were:
Sondos Hassan & Eric Nelson
Alex Rice & Saad Chowdhury
Hannah MacDonald & Sam McDougall
After two preliminary rounds in a field of 20 teams, the team of Hannah & Sam advanced to the final round, where they emerged as champions!
